Belt Squeal or Harmonic Balancer noise Sign In

I have a 91 FORD F 150 5.0 AC Automatic transmission 2 wheel drive 74,000 miles , I have a very loud squeal from the belt I replaced the belt twice the last one with a gates it was fine for 4 days then started again the ac clutch , fan clutch, water pump , belt tensioner, are new and the alternator is 2 years old the only thing that is not new is the air pump and PS pump, The squeal is loud at idle and goes away when it shifts but when i let off the gas running down the road it squeals , I cleaned the pulleys twice. spun everything by hand no noise, Does any one know about this or had this happen ? I don't know I'm starting t think its the balancer. Its getting embarrassing to say the least. I don't know if the truck has 74k or 174 k on it for sure I was told its 68k when i bought it.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

^ NOISE - "CHIRP" FROM ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT - VEHICLES WITH 5.0L AND 5.8L ENGINES

LIGHT TRUCK:
1989-94 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES

ISSUE:
An intermittent or continuous "chirping" noise may come from the accessory drive belt. This is more evident at idle speed particularly under humid and moist conditions. This is caused by a misalignment at the crankshaft, power steering and water pump pulleys. The existing water pump pulleys were found to have a crown outside the center line of the belt, causing a misalignment in the system.

ACTION:
Replace the water pump pulley with a new pulley which doesn't have a crown outside the center line of the belt. Refer to the following service procedure.

1. Replace the existing water pump pulley with a new water pump pulley (F4TZ-8509-B).

2. Make sure that the power steering pulley press is flush with the end of the power steering pump shaft. Correct if necessary.

Yes this is a very loud squeal not a chirping noise at idle and when I go down the road the trans shifts it goes away then when i let off the gas right to a loud squeal again.

Does it still make the noise with the belt removed?

I will try that Thank You , So if it does it could be the balancer ? I did spray belt dressing on the belt it went away for a few minutes then came back , I bought a $80 Ford belt but I dont want to wreck it if its something else

One thing is that you should never use belt dressing on serpentine belts. That stuff is sticky and will cause dirt and stuff to get stuck in between the ribs of the belt causing slippage. I believe it even states that on the can. Most belt manufactures don't even condone the use of belt dressing anyhow. It's just another product in the snake oil section of the parts store.

If you sprayed the belt and the noise stopped it has to do something with that. Inspect the harmonic balancer and make sure the inertia ring isn't slipping off the hub. Make sure your crankshaft end-play within specs and your power steering pump pulley is flush with the end of the pump shaft. With the belt off make sure the PS pump pulley shaft isn't loose or has too much end play.

You may need to make sure the ribbed pulleys are aligned with each other and not worn out. Pulley ribs do wear out. They make a laser tool to check alignment.

What is the part number of the belt and tensioner you installed?

Just a comment on belt dressing: Some (long ago) the idea was to make them sticky to get by with a loose belt. That type if so would make a belt noisy forever after using it after a short lived quiet and more grip. None are going to fix a real problem - period.

So far never a problem with brand name Gates for belts with a noise issue,
