Brake pad can't be changed b/c tire won't come off Sign In

It's a 1998, Toyota Camry, 200000+ miles 4 cylinder engine.

Ok so at first there was a small grinding noise coming from the front right tire when I braked. Then over time it got to where it happened when I was driving,
when it first happened I looked around and couldn't find anything but did not take off the tire to look at the pads just assumed it was a rock or sliding from the
rain that day. Well after awhile I noticed that it was getting hot really hot and had metal shavings all over near the lug nuts. And just recently the car wouldn't
stop it just slowed down and I had to pump the brakes just to get that from it. I was told that the brake pad is worn and all the brake fluid is going to that
one tire which doesn't work so I end up not stopping and my brake warning lights just now came on... Ok so that's where I am now and I can change the pad
and everything (I think I've seen it done up close before) but my tire will not come off it won't even make a full turn it just turns a little when up on the jack
and then it's like the brakes are locked. I tried kicking it really hard several times to dislodge it but it just wouldn't budge and I don't want to hit it harder b/c it
would fall off the jack. Any ideas what I could do just to get the tire off the car or what might be causinig it?

Oh, where do I start?
I really don't think you should be doing this on your own. You obviously have no experience in this and you are messing with someones life. The tire may be stuck on the hub and have to be hit from behind with a heavy hammer to get it off but I'm more concerned about how the brakes will be fixed. You have driven this WAY beyond where it should have been repaired and it's real dangerous and if you don't fix it correctly, it's going to get even more dangerous. You need an expert to look at this and determine the extent of damage so the problem is corrected properly.

I'd love to take it to a mechanic but I'm a student with no money to pay him so I imagine he'll keep my car after he fixes it. It's my life on the line and my college education if I can't get to school on tuesday and my job if I can't get to work so I don't really have a lot of time to wait around either... Thanks though

No, I'm afraid it's not. It's every other person on the highway with you who's life is on the line every time you drive that car. Even drunk drivers at least have brakes. You won't have much of a future to study for if you kill someone on the highway because of your negligence.
Grow up and park the car if you can't afford to maintain it safely.

A heavy rubber hammer may help but more on this. Owning a car and driving on public roads is a privilege not a right! If that car can hurt someone else YOU are at fault! It's YOUR responsibility to fix it right and if it costs too much don't drive it!

Ishkabbible; From the description of your symptoms, you are more than likely looking at replacing pads, at least one rotor, and both calipers. Normally, when the brake pedal goes to the floor, it is a master cylinder or rear brake problem;
Whether or not you do the repairs yourself, it's going to be expensive, and requires professional knowledge.
So, it could get worse. Since finances are an issue, I'd have to agree with Tom and HT. If you can't afford to fix this correctly, you'll have to just park it and arrange other transportation. It doesn't matter how a car looks, or even runs.
It MUST be able to stop.

Well I got it fixed at a shop had new pads rotors got shaved or something and fluids changed plus a tow don't have the receipt in my hand just under $500. That's just about 4 weeks or my part time work. So I'm sure those who said to get a professional are happy I did I really just wanted to look at the dang pad though ah well thanks anyway.

Oh and I don't care for candied peanuts sorry....

I just came into this thread and I'm glad to hear you got if fixed and your back to school....

Just so you know......no one here wants anyone to spend unnecessary money. I will say this, from what I read, I totally agree with the advise that was given. I can tell from you post with brk problem & fluid loss that this was beyond your experience level. You made a wise decision.

Ishkabbible; I'm really happy to hear that you made the right decision. I know that it's tough when money is tight. At least now, you'll feel safer as well as everyone else. You don't like Boston Baked Beans? Oh, I love 'em. Lots better than their damned tea. LOL. Have a great weekend, and thanks for letting us know the outcome.
