Hi,

I wanted to see if someone might know what this noise is? Most times when I turn my steering wheel I hear a weird almost grinding noise coming from behind the steering column. The only thing is it's not all the time just sometimes it happens.. Do you think it might be lower power steering fluid. Or is it something else? Also when this happens if i press in the gas I could feel some vibrations through the floor.

Any Ideas?

Actually this morning driving into work when i turned the wheel and the noise came back, I noticed it would get louder or quieter if i press the gas, even when stopped...

If the car can make this noise while stopped it kind of rules out CV joints and certainly the PS fluid needs to be checked and full. If down you really should find out why. PS pumps can go bad even when full. Before you go too nuts, try changing the fluid in it and hopefully if that's it it will help. Good Luck, Tom Greenleaf

Hi Tom,

I'm going to try getting some power steering fluid today and hopfully that does it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well it seemed to help on the way home no noise yet... I thought it was weird that power steering fluid would just disappear like that, do you think I might have a leak or is that normal that over time the fluid would just leak out?

Leak not normal but there is a product that I have had luck with that has been harmless to use in moderation, and has sealed small leaks. If a hose - they should be replaced. Keep some proper fluid with you and a funnel to put it in if needed till this gets permanantly solved. Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

Thanks Tom,

This did the trick. So far no noise. I'm also keeping some extra stuff in the trunk in case I go low again.

Hi - we're getting to be quite the CarJunky pen pals here! If you have a slow leak - mentioned that a product is out there but rare that might work and hasn't hurt anything I've used it in.

I'd like to see folks buy things from this site but it wouldn't be worth the shipping. It's called Trans-X for both PS and Automatic transmissions. I drive a car with 205K that had a tough sector shaft leak, and it took a few tries but it quit leaking PS and has been fine for 55K!!

Funny - I keep fluids and oils in all my car's trunks even when they have no problem! Be well,

Hey Tom,

I don't think this site sells that stuff, only really sells car performance parts and replacement car stuff.

Funny you mention the 205k miles, my car the BMW has 195k and going strong. It really does pay to change the oil every 3000 - 4000 miles.

Remember the old saying "A stitch in time saves nine?" It's true! I bought that car from a friend/customer and had taken care of it for years so knew its history. I would take it anywhere!

Lost count, bet I've owned over 100 cars, few with less than 100K! Never owned a new one and never had a car payment! Nice! Take care,
