Hey guys so for about 3 weeks or so i have been having this squeaking noise similar to the noise you hear when your breaks are worn out and you need to replace them. It sounds like it is coming from the right rear tire, i have changed all breaks all the way around and today i finally changed the rear passenger caliper thinking that it was causing the noise but it is still there. I am also driving on my spare which happens to be the same size as my regular tires it just does not have the rim on it. I also found out that prior to changing the rear passenger tire it was wobbling and i did not know till a friend pointed it out, the rim does have a really minor dent but i am not sure if that was causing it to wobble or if the wobble is what caused the noises to appear. I have been driving the car for about 3 months and it started 3 weeks ago. There is also a clicking noise that i hear but i cant point out if it is coming from that side of the car, i can only hear it when i am driving slow. Also the squeaking comes and goes, it is not always there and when it is there and i apply the breaks it is still there. I have done some research and a lot of people have a similar problem but the noise will go away when they finally apply the breaks, my noise still remains even when breaks are applied. I have no idea what it can be, i did a little more research and now i am thinking it can be the ujoints on the driveshaft? Anyway thanks everyone in advanced and also here are a few pics of the dent i was talking about on the tire, could this minor dent cause the tire to wobble?

Can you record the noise and post it up on a video hosting site and then paste the link in here?

Yes i can try! For now i found this on youtube and it is very similar to my sound however mines is more high pitched and it does not get stronger during a turn.

The noise in that video is from a rotor backing plate rubbing on a brake rotor. You notice when he turns the noise gets more intense.

Other: You should be able to get that rim fixed while you wait and spun w tire off to check for trueness. That spot will be the first place to leak in time and is not the noise IMO,

It is that exact noise just more high pitched. Today while we were changing the calipers, we put the car on neutral and spun the rotor and it made no noise. Tomorrow i am going to try to record the squeaking and clicking, and thanks Tom, i will be looking to fix it, i called one shop but they were going to charge me 120 to fix the little dent so im looking around to see if someone can do it cheaper because online i found the rim cheaper brand new so i dont get why it would be 120.

chrisgritz: The fix for that blip would probably just whack back with tire off and a hand sledge. I don't have a tire machine but use others still. Plain steel (look just like that) I would mark the wheel weights and position of the tire, take tire off, fix rim and spin it with tire off while wire brushing where it seals to tire and looking for its trueness.

Appears to be a truck size so whole rim used in many places pretty cheap if that one NG. If only for spare/emergency use just make it not leak.

Noise: OK - you spun rotor with no load so know it's load dependant. That strongly brings in a wheel bearing or hub problem along with knowing that dust backing place isn't rubbing as well and might not without a load. For goodness sake just look at it and if too close bend it back a bit and be done with that.

$120 bucks sounds more like a new steel rim not an apparent easy fix,

Alright well this morning i taped a little camera to the bottom of the car and i managed to capture the sound while i was reversing but when i put it on drive the camera no longer captured the noise because i guess of everything moving down there, but i could still hear it while i was driving so i cut the clip to just 20 secs. If it is not sufficient i can record some more it is just a nuisance with the little camera that i have. That noise you hear sometimes gets more high pitched and other times its less, while giving it speed the frequency did get faster.

Can't make that format work but doesn't matter. Have you so much as looked at the dang backing plate to rotor yet? Yes, load as in weight matters to bearing and if just ONE mm too close could make it rub and no telling what noises,

The video works fine.

That definitely sounds like a backing plate touching the rotor.

but the pitch changes and sometimes it completely goes away and sometimes it comes back, could the backing plate touching the rotor still be an option?

What is the point in this thread if you wont plain look at it? It's highly likely with any odd sound related to speed. Many you can just pull by hand and be done with it or pry but know what to pry against. COMMON issue.

Yes it can change with temps or assorted torque of turns, braking or not even go away for a day or week and come back. You'd see it's too dang close or not if you looooooooooked at it!

If not that we move on,

i checked the rotor plate but neither of the two at the back are touching, i removed the rotor from the right rear axle and two bands fell out and my dad said they were emergency brake bands if that helps any. We thought thats what was causing the noise but it still persist.

Re: Car squeaking, not breaks! Sign In

OK - Now more work if that's ruled out. Exact rear end type needed but would suspect bearing beginning to fail or possible problem with rust between push on rotor and hub if rusty could have some wobble and you would see it with spinning that wheel even with lug nuts tight but same wheel wouldn't wobble on another wheel most likely.

Could be tough now to verify without taking it apart and bearing spun in hand. Couple types possible by a parts look up but any type shouldn't have any noise or freeplay at all and might not at the beginning of failing so hard to suggest how to know without someone who has an ear for it or feel for it that may escape many.

It's not normal so I think it's time to really take apart and check or get some help if only to save time to get rid of this noise which is not normal so has to go,

Re: Car squeaking, not breaks! Sign In

So today we decided to remove the rotor on the left rear and when we took it out it had the exact same problem as the right, the emergency brake bands were gone on this side though and the remains of it were turned into little rocks and were stuck in the rotor. We removed them and drove the car and no squeaks!

Glad you found it. Both strongly suggests that something else went wrong to cause that much wear on really non wearing mini brake shoes but can rot up inside there.

Make sure cables are free and the fix is properly adjusted. Just a suggestion on that type is to purposely drag the parking brake when safe a bit now and then just to knock off the gun rust they can build up plus put checking them now and then which should be easy once you've removed the rotor if you do it now and then it shouldn't fight so much.

Need that brake even though the noise is gone without it for now,
