Corolla 2001 Strange noises Sign In

Hello again

I have a Toyota Corolla 2001, standard 1.8lit, 150k (kilometers), it sounds very noisy when accelerating, in winter when slush hits the underside, it is almost as if the engine exhaust manifold/donut to pipe seems to separate at for a few seconds. Runs great like a bat outta hell, ease off the gas, and within 20-30 seconds she's back to normal quiet.
Lately now in the summer I can almost bring this condition on, more so when it's wet. But mostly under hard throttle, as if the engine torque separates at the manifold to exhaust junction. Maybe need to replace manifold to exhaust seal/donut?

But my other problem is a annoying rattle, developed after this past winter, always when driving in a straight line, and below 30mph, any slight road imperfection causes the rattle to what seems both front wheels. No difference if accelerating, or downshifting, or braking. It can be heard separately when each wheel crosses over while rolling slowly into the driveway, and yes this is during a moderate turn.
Heavy bumps not so much, but sometimes even a small crack line on the pavement will do it. Yet when going around gentle or moderate corners, while driving about 20- 40 mph left or right, everything sounds fine solid no rattles, almost like new.

So far I have checked wheel nuts tight, callipers fine nothing loose, bearings no play, visually checked all the bushings tie rods, sway bar, nothing looks worn. Ball joint tested no wheel play 6-12 or 3-9 position. Struts & shocks no leaks.
It is metallic rattle but by turning in curves almost stops, head straight and it's back. Could it be steering related, very little play from wheel to wheel? Worn rack? Is there an adjustment to the steering box play? I can create a very similar sound by turning the steering wheel back and forth while driving, but it is not as loud, more of a dull clunk than bouncing metallic rattle.
Any Ideas?

This car should use a flexible exhaust pipe probaly in need of replacing.

Noises on turns could be lots of things but CV joints come to mind,

Hello Tom, Thanks for the reply

There is no flex pipe currently on the Corolla, (I have seen, and replaced those braided mesh types on other vehicles). It seems that maybe the two spring/bolts holding the pipe to the manifold, might be weak, and the torque from the engine at moderate to quick acceleration separates the joint enough to cause some blowby around the gasket inside the joint? In winter and summer when the exhaust gets splashed, it shrinks away from the joint also wanting to seperate, my theory anyway?

The metallic rattle noise is primarily when going straight, fairly quite in turns, although there seems to be about a 1/4 inch lateral play (pulling up, and down from above) on the CV's, since rolling along might think the CV could move around, but I agree in turns you would hear a clunk, clunk, clunk, but I don't hear that.

I would check the motor mounts on that. They are notorious for the front mount going bad and that will roll the engine away on acceleration.

Good one Hammer. Mounts would sure stress out exhaust connections. It the bolt and spring type they might need replacing too so get some PB on them asap to help. The high temp alum grease will help too when apart and it won't be a fight if you need to go back there,

I believe it's a hydraulic mount

Thanks, guys, I will check the mounts over again, although they looked good, no tears or fluids on them, how can you tell for sure they need changing?

Just power brake the engine in drive with the hood open and watch how much engine movement you get.

So since it's a standard, use the hand brake & or brake let it stall, and monitor engine movement?

It's a bit trickier with a standard trans. The parking brake will help but may not be strong enough alone. I have done it sometimes by having my heel on the brake and my toe on the gas but that can be tricky. You just want to apply considerable force to the engine so you can see if it moves.

Or, with the engine off, put the transmission in second or third, parking brake off, rock the car forward and backwards by hand while watching the engine movement. Just a thought.

Re: Corolla 2001 Strange noises Sign In

Hi Guys, I tried both methods, with the engine idling, and in first gear, I am standing outside with right foot on clutch, released clutch and during stall watched engine shake. The hand brake is perfectly adequate to hold the car from moving providing it's in good condition. (It is suppose too) I used both first and reverse, highest torque got between 1/2 inch to 5/8 movement at top of engine, this would be less at the actual front mount taking into account the distance from the top of engine cover to near the bottom. I would say the mounts are good.

I also thought & tried the rocking method, again first gear highest torque, simply rock and you can get a small movement on the engine block much less than with stall method, so this type of testing is really good to watch the entire drive train from the wheel to the moment the engine actually starts to move. Wthin 3/4 inch of vehicle travel, that includes tire totation, CV joints, trans gearing play, crank rotation, out to the pulleys. Again I'm happy with the tight reaction seems good to me, no noises.

Now to the good stuff, seek and you shall find, the metallic rattle. I would have seen this sooner had I used ramps, but I use axle stands, and the problem with those is with the wheel off, and the stands typically under frame, there is no weight on the suspension. This hid the problem, of the worn stabilizer link.
With no weight on the suspension the link was in tension hanging down.

When the wheel is in on and weight on it it is fairly relaxed, and that's when I noticed that it can be moved & it rattled, recreating the exact sound I was hearing. Going to replace them this weekend, and I'll let you know how it went.

Second issue with the exhaust noise under high engine torque, I'll either try to tighten the bolts, and or replace them & gasket.

Cool! You found one now on to the other. By nature a transverse engine and any motion - some normal is a strain on exhaust. Said before - I use the high temp grease on exhaust parts both so they'll behave later and for noise at moving connections like the flare type. Keep at it,

Re: Corolla 2001 Strange noises Sign In

Well the second problem is also repaired, the noisy exhaust effect when engine torques, & especially when the exhaust got wet. The two springs with bolts that hold the pipe against the exhaust manifold had rusted so badly, that one bolt had not only lost the washer, but went done a full 1mm from a 14mm to a 13mm head size. The head started to actually slip into the spring, and little if any pressure was against that side of the gasket. Noticed the damaged blown gasket as well.

I got everything off alright, a bit of a pain with the rust since we have a lot of salt up here.
Put on two new bolts, and gasket, all threads coated with Hi temp anti seize, just in case I or my son may need to work in this area.

Runs smooth and quite, a satisfying job well done if I say so myself.

I will keep an eye on the posts here in case someone needs some advice, I have been working on my cars almost forty years, but can always pick up some new things.

Thanks for everyone’s input

Got the T shirt on rusted stuff here in MA. Your lucky it was even a hex still.

Hey - thanks for the followup and success story,
