2002 Mercury Cougar XR
Engine Size: 2.5
80,000 Miles
5 Speed Manual

Fluttering/Humming noise from engine bay. It's rhythm is consistent with how fast the vehicle is moving. Noise disappears the very instant I apply light pressure to the gas. Happens regardless of being in-gear. I've heard anything from Trans-axle bearing issue to an exhaust leak.

The noise frequency is like a kid is running down a white-picket fence holding a stick to it, at 30-60mph, lol.

Also: Shifting is stiff/jerky. Feels like I'm "popping" into gears instead of sliding into them like before. The noise of my shifting is very audible.

What I've tried: I have only visually inspected as I do not have great mechanical knowledge, but I certainly understand when explained.

Thank you!

Does the sound go away or change if you push the clutch in all the way?
