Help! Engine problems. video link included Sign In

Hey...I've got a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 88k miles. It's been run very well, runs on synthetic oil since I bought it, never really given me any problems.

Last night I went to the store which is about 4 miles away. I shopped for 30 minutes or so before I got back in the car. I drove about 4 miles back and pulled into a turning lane to make a turn into McDonald's. I was sitting for a second when the engine felt like it was going to die. When I pulled forward about 5 feet in the turning lane, the engine cut off and the oil light came on.

I pulled into a McDonald's parking lot and shut the car off. The engine was smoking some and there was a burning smell. I let it sit for 20 minutes or so, and then made another mile trip home. The oil was low (it hadn't been changed in about 4.5 months, although I had only gone 2,000 miles since the last oil change).

I bought 2 quarts of oil the next day and added 1.25 quarts. I let it sit for an hour or so and then started the engine. It makes a loud clicking noise. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?? I posted a video of me starting the engine, the noise from the engine, me revving the engine just a little bit, and then the noise after I let it settle. The engine only ran for a minute. Here's a link to the video on youtube. Help!! I really have no idea what kind of cost/problem I'm looking at here.

Holy ass that sounds like shat!

Was the ac turned on when you made your video?

You should take the drive belts off and then see if your noise is still there with the engine running. That would eliminate the accessories and pulleys.

Sounds like you may have some very serious issues there. I assume the oil light is off now.

Check very closely around the belt areas for any belt driven components having a problem. It might even be a good idea to remove the belts and run it for a second or two to see if the noise is still there. If it is, i would have it towed to a shop for inspection.

There was no A/C turned on when I took the video (or heat either). For some reason, it sounds a lot louder on video. It's about 70-80% of the actual sound of video when you're standing there.

The oil light is off now.

That's a good thing, HT. Smile

It sounded like someone sticking a rain gutter into bicycle spokes.

edit:

Actually the more I listen to it, it sounds like a timing chain lost its guide.

Ok....so I haven't had a major repair on a car in years, so I don't know any trustworthy garages. Would you risk driving it to a garage, or do you think I should tow it? I don't have a real "car guy" friend. A lot of amateurs, but none that I really have a ton of confidence in (I trusted an A/C friend recently, and that cost me some money). I might take the video to one and see what they say about towing/driving.

Also, if you had to guess "worst case scenario" for this, what would you think?

And thanks for the quick replies. This is helping a lot.

I think you should have it towed. Ask your family and friends where they get their vehicles worked on. If it is a timing chain or an internal engine problem, you don't want to cause any more damage running the engine.

You really shouldn't get yourself worked up on the worst case scenario bit if you plan on sleeping tonight. Have it looked at and determined what is wrong. Then you can freak out when you get the estimate.

Yeah. I know. I'm just expecting the worst. It's just been that kind of year. I've had to replace my A/C on my house this year. Then lightning struck the tree next to my driveway this summer and dropped 1/3 of it on my car. It took out my rear glass. And less than a week later (before I could get the tree down), lightning hit the same tree and dropped another 1/3 of it on my neighbor's car. Even though it's not my responsibility legally to take care of his car (since it's considered an "act of God"), I didn't feel right having him pay out of his own pocket for me not acting quick enough to take it down. That cost me a few hundred. And then there's been some other things that have just gone completely wrong in general. It's been a rough year.

Hey....just updating. I had it towed to a garage today and hopefully should know what it is tomorrow. I'll post the diagnosis then.
