Humming noise Sign In

Hi, i have a 1990 Peugeot 205 cti, it has 107,000 on clock, took it to a mate yesterday because when i turn right there is some banging from the left front side, he told me it was probably the wheel bearings but last night i took it out for a run on the motor way, coming home i was doing 70 on the motorway and all of a sudden it car started humming, droning, above the engine, did this all the way home until i dropped a friend home, as i got back into town obviously i was driving slower and with more corners the noise disappeared but when i popped back out in it again the going down a long straight at 30 the noise started again until i turned a corner, if the car is standstill with engine running it sounds fine....Please help.

Re: Humming noise Sign In

The humming and droaning noise you mentioned while turning and while going along is consistant with a wheel bearing gone bad but the banging isn't my first call on that but a maybe with it.

This really needs inspection right away of all things "front" end especially that can move with suspension, bearings, and brakes too.

Check all wheels. Note that noises can travel from one side to another so the bad part might be on a quieter side.

Also check motor/trans mounts as they might be allowing excessive motions and some metal to metal rubbing and those could account for a banging sound,

Hi Tom, thanks for reply, just took someone out in the car, ( he does a lot of work on his own cars ) and he says it sounds like the thrust bearing and has said that if thats the case i may as well just have a new clutch fitted, would this make any sense going by the noises mentioned in my last post, chris

By this you mean a bearing to do with the clutch as in for the transmission? There would be noise when sitting still either present when clutch pushed to floor or when not touched - those I know of named "pilot" and "thow-out" bearings and lingo may differ for part names.

Again - clutch bearings should do this when car is not in motion. Now if while moving along only there are trans bearings and that's a maybe and YES if trans is out for that fix then I would definately replace clutch parts with new while there,

Hi Tom, i forgot to mention that whilst driving last night i passed a lorry spraying salt solution over the motorway, the whole car got covered with the salty spray and then when i got to where i was going the car sat outside for 6 hours, do you think theres a remote possibility that the salt has got in somewhere it shouldnt have and dried up, say, some bearings somewhere, chris

Re: Humming noise Sign In

Hi Again!

About road salts/chemicals uses to MELT snow/ice. Here the common product is plain mined "sodium cloride" raw form of table salt which is cheaper and nasty for corroding things but not right away. The liquids I've seen used sparingly in critical intersections is a glycol based antifreeze but too expensive for general use and IMO isn't very corrosive.

The cars here are all the same color (gray/white) front to rear, top to bottom EVERYWHERE if you must drive in the melted/salted stuff especially at speed. Dang junk goes into nukes and crannies and destroys cars big time but seriously not that fast so I'm ruling that out as the cause of a noise for now - "as you described it."

Now - I have clearly noted belts, both "V" types and serpentine make crackle noises from this road salt! YES! If so simply spraying some WD-40 on the belt would shut it up instantly - may not last but let's you know that was it.

More: If boots and covers to protect bearings are split and salts get into greased items they will fail much faster than if just plain wet but not one day ONE like that at least in my experience.

The bummer with road salts is that they find there way into areas that won't just wash off well. You may wash the car but all the hidden stuff can still be covered in salt. It stays till you can about drive in a good rain to get it out but leaves its damage and cars here quickly have expensive rust problems in an assortment of items, body, brakes, exhaust parts, fasteners to anything and so on.

Stuff is a car killer and avoid it when possible,

T
