2002 Honda Accord, 4 cyl
~60,400 miles

Hi everyone,

As i hit my 60,000 miles on my car the other day, Fri of last week I went to a tire place and had all 4 tires replaced. The next day, I noticed a slight grinding noise coming from the rear of the car (hard to tell which tire it relates to from inside the car). It is not constant, and doesn't appear to have any rhyme or reason to what causes it. Sometimes it happens going straight, sometimes when making a right turn, but mostly there isn't any noise at all. Speed also doesn't seem to be a factor, as it has happened both on the highway and city streets. For the first time today I noticed it while braking, but again, it wasn't consistent...it was there for a second or two, then gone.

I took it back to the tire place and they said "well it's not the tire rubbing". Well thanks, sparky, it's metal on metal, so obviously it's not the tire, which is made of rubber. Basically they told me they couldn't tell what it was and I needed to take it to a full service center. I'm not going to rant too much about them, I know they're busy so I'm sure if they can defer those kinds of things since they already have been paid, it is what it is I guess. The reason I am asking is having just dropped $400 on the tires, I don't have the $$$ right now to pay someone to unscrew up what the tire guys did, but if it's something serious that will cost me a lot more to fix down the road, I guess I need to figure out a way to take care of it pronto. Frankly I know squat in terms of auto mechanics, so I don't know if the fact that it's not very often that it grinds means it can wait a little bit or not. I'm guessing it's something with the brakes, but they seem to work fine, and since I know squat about this sort of thing, I'm not sure what exactly they could have done changing tires that would mess them up. Thanks in advance for any help/advice anyone can offer. Sly

Based on the mileage you may be ready for a brake job. On the other hand they may have bent the backing plate on the rear brakes somehow while installing the tires. When you took it back to the tire shop did they remove the tire to see if there was anything wrong or just put their eyeballs on it and send you on the way? At any rate ask your friends where they take their car for service and have it checked. Most places offer free brake checks. Just be prepared to say no to the brake shop. Good Luck
Jeff
