When i get in my car in the morning and drive, it goes good for the first ten minutes. Then around 35-55 mph, i get short burst where my whole car vibrates real heavy. It last just for a few seconds and seems to happen only when accelerating. It cam be quick short bursts or happen just once or twixe. Im not sure what is causing this.

I have 20 inch rims on my lincoln. Back tires are worn a bit. What could this mystery sound be? It seems to be getting worse. I feel the vibrations in my butt and floor. Not my steering wheel. So i suspect its something in the back? It vibrates something Really short and quick but they can ve so powerful i actually lose a few mph in acceleration.

No year, model and engine size?

You know you need rear tires so why are you looking for another problem while ignoring that?

Its a 1999 lincoln cartier v8 4.6L. The back tires are worn but i cant see that causing the problem. Why would it only do it when i accelerate

Cartier is a trim level. Is it a RWD towncar?

You want to take a close look at the driveshaft to include the U-joints and transmissions mounts.

All of what HT said plus questions - sorry. Are the 20" rims and whatever tires an option for this car and do they all match? Do they even fit in wheel wells OK.

Huge problem with many was air only type "air springs" can set way to high or low such that wheels/tires rub up to if those bags not inflated at all can't even drive this car.
Should be a switch to disable air suspension for when hoisted would get all confused and not set right and must remember to turn that back on.

If defeated (most would) now have put real springs or a combo so an air issue would strand them at least.

Tires and wheels being proper really matter on almost every vehicle must be to spec of the car w few exceptions. They might say "Lincoln" on the wheels or even Ford stamped and might not belong at all - check that if you need to measure,

Yes! Forgot that wasn't that uncommon. OP: A professional would know that feel near impossible to describe but is like a shudder and able to go away sometimes just feather the gas pedal,

You could try and replace the fluid and filter in the transmission and then add a friction modifier to see if that helps. If it goes away, and doesn't come back, its possible the additives in the transmission fluid had gone away. If it comes back, then it might be TCC time.

Make sure it's just that as said you could feather gas pedal and it would come and go. Describing it somewhat like the effect of the squeegee on glass it could be shined up for lock up contact spots.

Hate to suggest products that aren't already in new fluids of any kind but one named Trans-X by exact brand might make it stop WARNING! Do not use much as per instructions on container! Pay attention - use just an OUNCE - I mean it. If better only but something one more and quit at that. Don't ever count on magic in a bottle stuff usually more harm than good.

Then I'd change out all fluid as DS said the additives in it are gone no doubt,

I don't discount the possibility of DS's suggestion about the torque converter but can we at least look at the driveshaft and trans mount first before diving into trans fluid changes? I haven't seen a chattering torque converter in 20 years.

If the converter is chattering during lockup, that will happen at a steady throttle, not acceleration.

So I noticed that when I put the engine in reverse that it rocks backwards and snacks my frame. When I put my engine and drive, neutral, first, park, or second, it doesn't Rock violently back and forth. But if I have my foot on the brake and Go from Park to reverse you can feel, hear, and see the engine Rock backwards and hit the frame of my car. I noticed that most of the vibrations come from acceleration and going uphill, all of which puts strain against the engine enforce it backwards. I don't spect it's amount on the sides of my car, because it only moves backwards. I suspect it's amount in the back of my car or under my frame somewhere that is responsible from holding the engine from going in the backwards position. Should I suspect faulty transmission mounts. I'm not really sure where to look for any other mounts other than the side mounts on my engine. And I can't seem to find a good diagram around the internet that demonstrates the location of the mounts on my car. Again I own a 1999 Lincoln Town Car

I bought some lucas transnission fix. I checked my fluid and it looks good. But if it is a tcc then i suspect the transmission fix would help. And if it does then i know what to replace if the problem all of a sudden gets better?

? It does this right away before you move? Not converter lock up issue it's more likely a transmission mount center or to frame on sides or engine mount usually just one.

If you have a belt driven fan the transmission mounts can allow rear of trans to drop and far hits the shroud top of the fan! Happened a lot on slightly older than this model year but should be identical?

If you didn't rustproof the sides to frame or the owner before you they all failed in rust belt areas which is where I am - used to keep spares or once the whole bar rotted ends off enough they made them aftermarket!

Don't use LUCAS for trans anything! OMG there's no magic already say that all over the place and if so know which one and almost never use the amounts suggested they are selling product with no regard if it works or ruins things just sell products!!!!!!!

Yea. If i slam it in reverse the engine smacks my frame. What are the slides? Do you know of any diagram that i can use to help me locate the tranny mount or these "slides"

Lost in finding a picture of it. MOST, chassis cars that are RWD will support transmissions with a rubber and metal mount at the transmission on a bar that also goes to the frame on the sides many also use a rubber/metal mount there some just bolt it solid there.

Anything wrong with that - mounts, bent up maybe, rusted out mount or ends of the bar to frame the engine-trans are bolted together counting on support from the trans or as a unit can tilt by weight of it down such that front of engine is up and trans is down if rusted out especially.

That would bang or allow a belt driven fan even to hit its shroud up front or assorted problems.

It's just a possible spot to make noise of "banging" when not even moving yet in the chassis called Panther in Fords used 3 mounts with rubber and metal one at transmission, one each on a bar where it connected to frame on the sides that could let go - usually rust but could have broken.

When vibrations from mounts in general that have failed by the rubber that is magnified as clunks, assorted noise that can come and go.

This you need to just look at yours. Checking motor/trans mounts you would VERY carefully use proper size wood to support engine or trans by the oil pans (don't do this if confused or not understood totally) and lift while watching.

In this case you'd probably see it's a problem from a view under the car if this is that at all - remains on the list of why this problem is there is all.

Said it was common on some known to me FORD full size chassis with rear wheel drive more common for trans mounting than engine - the sides more common as they are exposed to water and rusted more than engine or center trans mounts.

If you can't get under this car and at least look and be safe doing so don't get under any car that is hoisted without total understanding how,

Update. Did a good check on my tranny fluid. It was a nice scarlet color but it was gritty and had little black streeks and clumps in it. Maybe it could also be bad trans fluid since it takes a second to change into gear. For example, if i go from R to. D it takes like 2 or 3 seconds of time before it kind of jerks forward and goes. Should i change the fluid or completely syphon it all and replace the filter?

As I already advised, stop messing with your transmission before you create a problem that you don't already have.

Don't do a thing until you get the car up on a lift and someone knowledgeable inspects the transmission mount and the driveshaft/U-joints.

This is getting ridiculous. You obviously have mount problems, just from your description in the previous post.

Quote from back a few by me "Don't use LUCAS for trans anything!"
Said DO NOT USE ADDITVES - NO MAGIC IN A CAN 99% CAUSE PROBLEMS AND JUST DID DIDN'T IT?
Time to just take this car in and quit messing with it. Transmission if that is now something to deal with. Let a pro decide on the approach just for that which may not have been the problem at all - we just don't know.

If you aren't going to read suggestions or believe any of us why bother? Time to send this problem out for professional help now choose one who can suggest in person what the hell just happened to the transmission and tell them you used junk in it,

I plan on putting the car on ramps tomorrow and inspecting the motor mounts and transmission mounts. I understand that one of these is most likely gone bad. When I mentioned the dirty transmission fluid, I was only adding to the conversation as to something that might help correct the issue further. I don't see a negative impact of changing my transmission fluid, especially if it's dirty. I've changed fluid before and changing the transmission fluid shouldn't have any negative impact on the transmission at all. From what I understand that's just an urban myth. The only way it would have a negative impact on your transmission is if you have extremely dirty fluid with a lot of metal in it. My fluids not really dirty but it is a little bit gritty. So I don't feel it would hurt changing it, and if it corrects the problem then it would be a lot cheaper than buying and putting on new mounts. But like I said, I'm going to take a look at the mounts tomorrow and give you guys an update. I've searched all around the internet to find the solution to this mysterious Rumble and nobody yet has found it. So I'm pretty determined to get to the bottom of all this

You couldn't be more wrong. I have seen car after car drive in and not back out after a high mileage trans fluid change.

It appears you would rather debate the advice you are given than follow it and this thread has run it's course now. You have been advised. If you don't choose to listen, that's on you. It's time to close this now. You can proceed as you see fit.

I must be a masochist to carry on with this - can't help it:
DON'T USE RAMPS - UNLESS you are totally sure they wont pull the lower air dam off AND have jack stands AND proper wheel chocks behind rear wheels AND only do this on level concrete - no asphalt, not even hard ground and never if not level.
Sub note: Most of these have lousy parking brakes too so just forget ramps and use proper jacks and stands not cheap ones.

Now it's your life if you mess this up never mind the car.
Changing trans fluid is still AYOR if done right along a good thing. If not known or never a chance you finish it off right away blowing more junk than even a new filter can handle - game over for that trans possible and might still not be the reason for the trouble.

What's with the wheels back at the top? If this was cut into a trailer I'd wonder why REAR wheels/tires would be showing a problem? Can be done but you can bend a real differential axle housing.

Just at least pay someone or shop to hoist it and allow you to check it with or without their suggestions if you wish. Not all will allow customers into work areas but no harm in asking.
You should know in no time at all what is wrong with full view underside of this car even better with professional help just find out what it is,
