Loud noise disappears when turning left... Sign In

Hey I've been noticing that my car sounds a lot louder than it should recently. The interesting thing is that the noise disappears completely when I turn the wheel left - when I'm going straight or right it's really loud. I don't really know how to describe the noise - it's not high pitched or anything but I guess it could be something rubbing or vibrating. It seems to be loudest when I'm going around 30mph.

I can't see anything in the wheen arches and there's nothing leaking or hanging off anywhere. It's been doing it for a while with no adverse effects but it's pretty annoying cause it's so loud it drowns out my music sometimes!

Any ideas?

You didn't say what kind of car? Wheel bearings can do this and by the time you get a vibration you are on borrowed time.!! Run - don't walk to take care of that! Just my two cents. -T

It's a 1997 Renault Clio 1.2. Would noise due to wheel bearings disappear when I turn left? What happens if I don't get it repaired quickly enough? As I said it's been doing it for at least a couple of months now and I do a lot of motorway driving so it's surprising nothing's happened yet if it's that serious. Anything i can test on my own or is it just garage work?

Never heard of that car but no problem - wheels are round and tech is tech. I will quit entirely when someone invents the square wheel the performs!

You asked: "Can anything serious happen" -- If a burned out bearing problably just a wheel that won't turn. It could make wheel fall off!!!!!!!!!!! Your call, but I wouldn't play with this symptom. - T
