Loud whistling from rear of car Sign In

Year of vehicle 1990
Make of vehicle (Ford/ Chevrolet) olds
Model of vehicle ( Taurus/ Cavalier) toronado
Engine size (2.0/ 5.7) 3800 3.8l v6 auto
Mileage/Kilometers 143k

this does NOT affect how the car runs or drives, but is too annoying to sell the car as it sits.
its a rather loud but annoying whistling from around the tank area.
ive unplugged the air ride system and even went as far as to remove all fuses and relays one by one to see what system may be making this noise, but it did nothing.i just replaced the fuel pump and cleaned a ton of rust out and put in a new filter, this stopped the noise for 50 miles but it since returned.it also did this noise prior to replacing the pump.
ive stopped at autozone and had a guy there listen to it and he says hes never heard a fuel pump make this noise.
ive disconnected the vent hose thats with the 2 fuel lines with no help.
it will also oscillate with the turn signals when used and change its pitch,so that tells me its electrical and putting a strain on the charging system.
ive also put it up on ramps and went under while running, kinda hard on your back with all those fumes but best i could tell it was loudest on the passenger side near the forward part of the tank,i whacked it with a hammer and it stopped last night, but has since returned.
its not rpm dependent as in park in revving it doesn't affect it,but taking off from a stop does and it fades away with more gas peddle you give it,but gets louder when you let off the gas.
im needing to sell this car as i was given another one,but no one is gonna buy a car that has a noise this loud.
also the last time i pulled the pump it had the rubber boot that fits around it all expanded and i had to cut it and then zip tie it to make it fit back on.
also the lock ring gasket wasn't a perfect fit when i put the pump back, could this cause an issue?

im seriously stumped here and about to have it put on a rack, but i cant afford it really.

This is still something at the fuel pump from what I can see. Both the old and a new pump make this same noise? Hmmm - it may not be mounted properly somehow as you said there was a problem with the retaining ring.

I think you'll have to go back there and perhaps remove the pump again,

Re: Loud whistling from rear of car Sign In

i posted this question to another forum and was told a guy there had the same exact issue, its the nipple on the return line on teh sending unit that has a crack in it and the fuel going past it makes it act like a reed.
i havent pulled it back off yet,but his explanation sounds like the most likley cause of anything i can come up with.

the retaining ring and its round rubber seal may be an issue if the tank needs sealed for some reason, but i dont think it is designed like that.
the seal gasket is a bit to large and im sure leaves a gap somewhere.
there is a vent line going in with a one way valve at the end,i messed with it a bit last time i had it apart and it seemed fine.
ill posy back anything i can if it gets fixed.

Hmmm - be nice if you could get safely under it on a lift with it running and put your hand right on something that would stop it and investigate right there. Agreed - a reed or check valve could be making a noise. I've had a couple simple PCV valves that for no apparent reason made a ruckus like all hell broke loose - go figure?
