Mazda3 Skyactiv 2013 weird metal/scraping noises Sign In

Hi everyone!

Before I explain my problem, please keep in mind that English is not my first language.

Car info : mazda 3 skyactiv 2013. About 15 000 km. Engine size : 2.0.

Now, for my problem! My car has been making weird noises since November. Here are the details :
- it doesn't happen all the time
- it SEEMS like it happens when it's (more) cold (Quebec cold weather)
- when it happens, it usually sounds as if someone is cutting metal, sort of like a loud scrapping noise (?)
- it comes from the front on the passenger side
- I have been to the dealer two weeks ago. They said it was a loose tie rod on the driver side and it was taken cared of. Obviously, it's not that...

I have an appointment next monday, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what it could be? I put a link with the noise that the car makes. It sounded a little like a train this time. The other times it was even louder and more like a nonstop metallic sound. Then it eventually stops when I brake and come to a full stop (red light, etc).

Thanks in advance!

* edit : added more details

Bonjour mon ami and don't count on my French!

Can't make you link to the sound work at all?

OK - #1 If not something damaged this has to be a warranty thing. 15,000 KM! That's nothing X .62 = 9,300 miles - nothing.

What might be and not notice that YOU might find yourself knowing that some snow and icy hard snow banks are like rocks it might have bent a backing plate more likely to a front rotor.

If you don't know what I mean that a shield you really see better with wheel off that is there to help keep road moisture and debris away from the rotor. Some metal some might be plastic and I can't guess for this so you have to look.

If metal you could maybe just pull it back away if you see it's too close. That or pry it but absolutely know what you are prying on so you don't cause damage to something else.

Of course could be all wrong but free to check this anyway. Those can make some pretty wild scraping noises usually will be louder or softer on a turn at some speed.

If you by chance ran this thru crusty snow or snow bank most cars have weak stuff that will snap or bend easily sitting pretty low.

For the shield mentioned I'll guess you should be able to fit about a pencil or a little less between it and the rotor all the same around where it is.

You said "scraping/grinding" which really means if NOT a bearing real obviously bad (could be even this new) then it's something physical touching something moving - almost certain.

Look as best you can just with it sitting there even hood open to see if you see anything touching anything. It's unlikely a moving engine item the way you described it,

PS: Did you mean Quebec as in the city or Province? Doesn't matter too much, all of it is cold and likely more snow than where I am inland Massachusetts......Think more like Southern NH type temps/weather.........

Hello Tom.

Here is another link to listen to noise my car is making : http://picosong.com/LqjB/ I hope it works now, I will update my original post as well. Keep in mind that it is usually much louder, nonstop metalic noise. I don't know if it can be related (and I failed to mention that in the original post, sorry!), but I sometimes hear a sort of metallic clunking sound on the front passenger side as well.

As I have absolutely no car knowledge, I can't/won't take the wheel off. If it is metal, I would surely break something ;(

As I live in the north, it could quite possibly be ice. We have quite a lot of that, icy rain mixed with snow and gigantic snow banks. It wouldn't surprise me that ice bent or snapped something. That was my theory.

I'll look tomorrow if I see something unusual. I'll try not to drive too much this weekend in case it's a bearing.

Finally, as for where I am writing this, I meant Quebec as the province. I'm quite close to Montreal. As you said though, all of it is cold! Can't wait for warmer weather, still have to wait for a while for that.

Thank you for your answer,

Valerie

Noises are really hard to diagnose without being there to hear where the noise is coming from to isolate the noise's possible location. Things may have to be removed to perform visual inspections.

The vehicle still should be under manufacture's warranty? Either way your still going to have it looked at by your dealer anyway. We could guess all night and get no where.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Heard the noise and that didn't really help. I'll guess a brake noise and would be under warranty at those miles and age. If you don't and aren't totally up to safely taking a wheel off and back on this isn't for you to do.

Know that if that somehow was ice jammed up and it can in wheel wells it would melt away and noise if it was just that be gone but any damage would stay. Actual brake parts really don't get harmed by any reasonable snow/cold or ice at all. If fact just some use of them warms them all up and if any issue that alone self fixes rather quickly.

I'd send this off to a dealer with papers. Would be really surprised if not totally a warranty covered problem,

T
