Need help with wheel bearing info Sign In

Car started making humming noises, mechanic said one wheel bearing is going bad. I've had quotes from different places that are all over the place- I don't want to get ripped off so what is reasonable $ to fix it and what are the main questions I should ask? I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt, 2.2 L. engine. Thanks!!

I'm seeing list prices for the part ranging from $125 to $190, depending on the quality anf the labor is less than an hour so I wouldn't expect it to top $300.

Ok, so far I've gotten a quote of $250 for the part and another $130 in labor and taxes- but they didn't specify the quality of the part and if it had any warranty, so how do you determine whether it's a cheap or quality part? They can tell you just about anything!

You pay a little more for American made bearings like BCA, Timkin and Nartional. All the others are Chinese made junk. Most parts stores have their own labels or just white box stuff at bargain basement prices but they are junk.

Ask up front what you are getting and ask for the old part(s) back too. As HT said the Chinese bearings have a horrible failure rate and much lower cost - yes 1/2 or less.

Just today (not doing much car stuff anymore) bought one made in Canada is OK IMO also as well as some from Mexico and Israel that surprisingly does make car parts. I can't guess labor rates or ways of assorted shops so ask and insist non Chinese would be my suggestion.

Also - many of these are "while you wait" jobs and would speak to the tech directly about what part is being used not just the service writer and sorry - hate that some to many places you may never know who actually is doing the work whatever it is home, car or whatever. When happy ask for that person for another time or if not find out what went wrong.

Easy for most of these jobs IMO with little chance of snags to make it take longer. I wonder if the bad one now was once a cheapo done already!

Timken and National both gone global. Even Moog has gone China. The ones you want are the ones made in Japan.
