Please Help - Knock sound & engine fail Sign In

Hi all,

Hoping to get some insight and advice as I know next to nothing about cars. I own a 2019 Infiniti QX50 Essential AWD and while on the highway yesterday I heard what sounded like a knocking sound. Upon lowering the radio I then clearly heard it but it was faint....As I was continuing to drive home the sound became louder - most noticeable when either letting off the accelator or pressing down further onto it. Keeping it on cruise control resulted in the least "loudness" of the sound.

About 10 miles from home the sound was very loud at that point and the egine light came on...I barely made it to the rest stop. At that point the car struggles to start but when it does it has a loud knocking or ticking while idling and will only go about 5-10mph in drive and will not go in reverse at all.

I kept up with all my services, I used premium gas, oil is not low nor was I leaking any fluids, car did not overheat and the temp guage was normal until the very end.

Tommorow i am having it towed to Infiniti service. I still am covered under warranty but i am wondering two things: What could this possibly be on a well kept car with only 21k miles on it? and B. Should I take this as a sign to sell the car once its repaired under warranty as I can currently get 23k for it?

If you tell them that don't be surprised if they void your warranty altogether for continuing to drive with the noise.

We can't begin to guess what the problem is but you will find out when you get to the dealer-------- by towtruck I advise.

Re: Please Help - Knock sound & engine fail Sign In

Thanks Hammer Time - but I may have given the wrong impression in my description. I didn’t drive it all that long from the start of hearing the sound until I needed the tow. Perhaps maybe 2 miles or so until I was able to get to the next exit. At first the sound was so faint I had to turn off the radio to even see if I was hearing something. When I confirmed I did I had my wife call Infiniti to schedule an appt. By the time the call ended the sound became loud and I pulled over to the next exit.

So explaining that I essentially heard the sound and got to the next exit would void the warranty? Would they expect me to just stop in the lane immediately and just call a row because I heard a noise and no check engine lights or anything where even on? I’m not being sarcastic just an honest question. How else can I word it to avoid it if that’s the case?

Also my father in law had a diagnostic tool and it showed the following errors below.

P23F5
Cylinder 4 Injector "B" Air-Fuel Ratio
Imbalance

P0304
Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

P0303
Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

P0014
"B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Bank 1

P11A7
Indicates a problem with the VCR stopper position.

I guess that just depends on the dealer and what you tell them. I would advise you to check the engine oil before arriving at the dealer so they can't blame no oil.

Being that the car is a 2019, I assume this is a used car warranty you have or you paid for an extended warranty.

Those extended warranty companies are known for excuses to get out of paying so tell them you stopped immediately when you heard the noise. Sounds like it has some sort of valve failure.

Thanks - I will do that; I checked the manual it says every 7,500 miles to change it. It’s only been 4,200. The dipstick shows it right above the “LOW” indicator. I guess to play it safe I’ll just grab a bottle of oil now and add it in?

Yes, I would top it off but don't overfill it. Make sure you use the correct oil.

Thanks again I really appreciate it. I found the correct oil per the manual. Any idea how I know how much to put in without “over filling”

You have to put some in and check it again. The low oil mark in generally 1 qt. so add a little less than a quart. Be on level ground when checking the level.

I will - I did what you said and made sure I moved the car to a level surface (about as level as I could get). Checked the dipstick again and noticed I could now see the word “low”. The oil line was literally right underneath the word as if it was underlining. So I added one additional quart thinking that would be enough?

Re: Please Help - Knock sound & engine fail Sign In

Thought I would drop a line in to update you. So the car was dropped off to Infiniti dealer a week ago today. That first day they said they "dropped the pan" and I quote "We obviously saw no sludge because you take care of the car and it has only 20k miles, but we did find metal shavings". I explained thats exactly what was explained in an article regarding a federal investigation against nissan motors - people are having hearing engine knock, followed by loss of power and subsequently total engine failure and resulting inspections show metal shavings in the oil. (link below) He acknowledged that he was aware of that.

He explained that he had to submit a claim to the Nissan engine and power train division which is not the same as when dealers do the work themselves as they get reimbursed by them; similar to how we would put a claim in with auto insurance after an accident. I checked in 3 additional times last week and each time he said he keeps following up with them and they keep asking to provide new / different pictures as part of the claim since he is asking for a total engine replacement. I asked if this was normal and he said "mostly" and likely due to the high dollar cost of the replacement estimated at 15k between parts and labor.

Not sure if hes BSing me but today marks one week that they have the vehicle and I still have not yet been told the warranty division approved it yet....Frustrating....

That sound legit. They are careful to cross all the "t"s and dot all the "i"s.
