Racheting NoisenWhen starting Sign In

I have a:

06
Dodge
durango
4.5 litre egine

When I turn the ignition on it doesn't start just sounds like someone is ratcheting. Any idea what this could be?

Thanks!

Re: Racheting NoisenWhen starting Sign In

Subject to my interpretation of "ratcheting" which because it isn't starting may be broken teeth on the 'flywheel' -- is so and engine not cranking you can turn most of those by crank bolt and it would crank the engine and start to get it where you if you are going to fix this and could see broken teeth either thru an inspection plate or with starter removed.

Old schooling with this - engines generally only stop running in one of three spots so if this is the issue it will dang near do this every third try. Owned some of these not to be fixed but just kept the tools to turn the engine a bit to good teeth,

Hi Tom,

The only thing I understood was "flywheel" Pirate and that sounds expensive... It sounds like I need to have it towed to the shop sooner than later.

Thanks for your reply,

Re: Racheting NoisenWhen starting Sign In

Sorry if I confused you. Take a look when it does this with hood open and see if engine is turning or not. That part I was unsure of and the problem would be easier to figure if that was known.

Describing noises is a challenge most of the time. I still like this section at the site even if tricky to describe noises.

*******************

Yes if this is really broken teeth on the flywheel it will be labor intensive more than parts but if this is a plain RWD only Durango should be less intense than lots of other configurations out there.

You still need to know what if it takes help then so be it as it isn't starting and this might be some easy job for an average DIYer depending on what,
