Renault Scenic Clunky Engine Noise Sign In

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFmWGCyHsyE

I've just bought myself a 2004 Renault Megane Scenic 2 - 2.0 VVT Auto Petrol. It has a few faults but it was an absolute song a £400. With 12 months road tax and MOT

I think it has done about 100k miles. I have no idea of previous service history so I am thinking I will change the timing belt/chain and give it a service to get a few years motoring out of it.

It has quite a loud engine noise as you can see in the video I posted to youtube. Have a listen and see what you think it might be.

At a guess I was thinking it might be something to do with the timing chain but I'm no expert, I just like getting my hands dirty sometimes!

Any advice is much appreciated.

Sounds to me like the timing chain is shot and slapping around and hitting the case. Don't have that car here so can't give you anything specific.

Re: Renault Scenic Clunky Engine Noise Sign In

Searching for a timing kit its looking like its a belt instead of a chain.

How would I diagnose this fully?

I guess taking the cover off and having a look for a start.
