Sounds like flat tire Sign In

Hi. My boyfriend has a 2006 Chevy Equinox with AWD. I'm not sure what the engine size or mileage are.

We were driving back from Colombus, Ohio to Rochester, NY, and at about Pennsylvania, we started hearing this noise. It sounded like there was a flat tire, but we didn't have one. All looked good. The faster we drove, the faster the noise was. It sounded a little like a cat was going to throw up. Like the car was gagging. The noise was coming from the back of the car somewhere, but he couldn't hear it when he walked next to the car while I drove because of road noises. There were no vibrations in the steering wheel, and the steering seemed fine. No pulling to any side or anything. We drove from Pennsylvania through Buffalo, NY, and finally decided to get towed (a couple hours later) around Pembroke, NY. The noise seemed to be getting louder at this point, but the car was driving fine. We didn't do anything to fix it yet.

I remember we thought we hit something at one point but thought later that maybe we hit a small pothole on one side of the car, and all seemed to be ok. We weren't hearing a noise at that time or for a while after.

My boyfriend thinks it's the differential, but I don't think so because we're not feeling pulling or vibrations in the steering wheel. I think it's a bearing or tire, but not an off-balance tire because of the lack of vibration in the steering wheel and lack of that type of noise. Or maybe it's the emergency brake or thing that holds the tires on the car (I'm no expert). I was using the emergency brake more than he normally does because I do that with my car (park on a hill).

Hope you can help! Thanks!

Michele

If parking brake was hanging up that wheel should have been hot or perhaps even smoking visably.

I think you need to hoist the whole vehicle and spin each wheel one by one and close inspection of tires on inside as you don't seem to see anything at a glance.

Tough call if a pot hole or road debris caused this as to what would take the hit,

Well, my boyfriend brought it into the shop and they said it was the rear differential that is shot, to the tune of $2500. That's pretty expensive for a car that's only 2 years old. Thanks for the help!

Do some homework on that! Did it get damaged or just a strange/early wear problem? Damage should be under insurance, and early failure under either warranty or recall if this had really blown up early like that.

You're right - 2 years isn't that old and there are extended warranty things you may not be aware of. Have the VIN# handy and get some help from a dealer on something like that,

$2500 is rediculous. We do quite a few (especially GM) differentials. A HIGH price is $1300 parts and labor, and that would be carrier, bearings, axles, ect. If your warranty or insurance won't cover it, SHOP AROUND!
