Speedometer noise

I have a whistle sound coming from the speedometer on my 90 Toyota truck. I took off most of the dash board and got to the speedometer itself. Took that off and tried to see what was wrong. The dial that turns the speedometer arm makes a tweaking or whistling sound when driving. All gears. What can I do to fix it? I have moved your response to start a new question of it's own. tadscazighini

It's no doubt a cable and just lubing it would solve that. It's old now and the cable generally just has a graphite lube - I use grease and have had no problems reoccurs. Unfortunately most cables come out from dash end only making it a project in some. Hope this is easy to get at. Test that you have it in right with rear wheels hoisted, T

If it has a typical speedo and cable it will connect behind speedo on dash - you need to pinch it to remove most. Pull cable out and I grease them with silicone grease and put back. Just a thin layer and you'd never need to do that again IF that's the issue which I think it is, T

I did exactly that. It was a bit of a challenge to get my hand behind there, but I ended up getting better access by removing the middle vent. I greased it, put it back together and thank God no more whistling. Only now I ran across another problem, the speedometer arm isnt moving. :( if its not one thing its another. tadscazighini

When you put cable back in they typically have square ends. They must be in position or cable won't move. When putting a cable back in push such that you know it in trans properly and it won't spin in your hands or with little pliers from the dash end. I think it didn't mate up properly now, T
