Suspension Clunk '98 Corolla Sign In

1998 Toyota Corolla, 147k miles. There is a "clunk" sound in the right front corner that seems to occur when going over a bump - not as the shock compresses, but as it decompresses or unloads.

We have been unable to isolate the problem. The car has new strut assemblies and all bolts are tight. The car has been up on jacks, we have inspected all the joints, shook the tires and steering, etc. Wheel bearings and ball joints seem good. There is a little wear in the half-shaft, but not enough to make the noise. Other suspension components appear tight.

We have not been able to reproduce the sound in the driveway, however I have not been able to get under the car as it was being bounced up and down.

I think the noise was occurring before we replaced the strut assemblies. I can confirm they are properly torques.

Clearly we are missing something - Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Get a prybar and check the play in the control arm bushings. When you replaced the struts, did you replace the mounts as well? Also, there are rubber isolators that go between the coil spring and the strut cartridge base that if not installed on the new strut or in rough shape will cause nasty noises.
