Thumping noise from steering column

Thumping noise from steering column Sign In

2000
Pontiac
Bonneville
70000 miles

When turning left/right there is a thumping noise in the steering column. After the thump the car pulls in the direction that I was turning.

Check everything to do with steering of course but I'd focus on the shaft and most likely a "U" joint type part of the shaft seen underhood on shaft that turns the rack and pinon.

That's not common but could make a thunk and be sticky in either direction amoung several things,
