Whistling noise in engine;idles funny Sign In

My car (97 Dodge Neon) idles funny in the morning. Idles high and low, high and low, high and low as it sits in the driveway. Also, (don't know if they are related), I occasionally hear a whistling noise in the engine (passenger side) that sounds like a cell phone ringing at times. It comes and goes but is heard when I am driving down the road. (Lasts a little while and then I don't hear it for a time.) Any ideas?

Things to check in general with this complaint:

* Vacuum leaks

* Integrity of air cleaner assembly

* Any parts that don't look right, wires unplugged etc.

If you can catch it making the noise - carefully jockey around vacuum and air cleaner and see if the noise changes. Keep hands away from hot items and belt. A noise and the funny idle means you should at least rule these things out.

If you find nothing we will move on from there. - T
