Yukon XL makes strange noise when turning and only in cold weather

My 2003 Yukon XL Denali makes a strange noise when I turn (left and right) and it only does this when it is cold outside. Yesterday after I got out it smelled like something was burning or burned. The is not quite grinding but almost a grinding sound. Thanks so much for anyones input.
