grinding noise when the steering wheel is rotated in very slow speed Sign In

2000 Hyundai Elantra makes a humming or faint grinding noise when the steering wheel is rotated in very slow speed or when stopped. It only happens when the engine is cold, goes away after a few minutes of driving. PS and other belts are 16 months old. Belts had a chirping noise which went away a few months ago.
Is it a belt issue or something else?

Basic first:
* Check fluid level is correct for everything of course PS. If not full find where it's leaking and fix it.
* Check belt tension and if in true alignment in perfect "plane" with each pulley on that belt.

* If self tensioned look for marks of range see it's within that.

Basic other: Belts not too thrilled with cold some noise is cheap belts and or worn/shiny pulleys there are belts that mitigate that. If all else is fine try spraying even water or AYOR WD-40 on ribbed side of belt(s) and pulleys just enough see if problem is gone for a little while. If so think about new belts and a new tensioner just because made specially as a quiet belt.

Note: This is around a 19 year old vehicle unsaid care, garaging or miles. Lots of anything possible IMO double its life expectancy still can do fine takes relentless attention to details all along its history. If just belt(s) for 16 months check the whole periodic list of the things you should be doing by time and miles don't quit that or the car will quit you. That list is printed in owner's manual or probably find it on the web verbatim should be an extensive list of things can't mess that up,

Re: grinding noise when the steering wheel is rotated in very slow speed Sign In

I sprayed water on the belts when the engine is running, car in park. It did not make any difference. All fluids are OK. It needs an oil change but that should not be the cause of this issue. I don't think it is a brake issue because the grinding noise happens even when the car is fully stopped and I rotate the steering wheel left or right. If I hold the steering wheel after rotation the grinding noise continues. Brake noise need some movement to occur.

Brakes aren't moving when totally stopped so if two noises they probably are not associated. Water spray can be telling of a belt noise if not results take it or them off and spin pulleys OR have a pro just listen to this.

Stopped a PS boost isn't necessarily done if wheel is turned at all off of center and still might not be conclusive. Truth is pump works hard when still turning because you are scrubbing the tires vs rolling even a little suggested so it doesn't work so hard.

Right now seems a PS pump issue or rack issue perhaps both involved now? These thing do work hard and have a life to do that. Almost nobody changes PS fluid rather only when a problem comes up.

Last thing is always going to be have a pro hear noises when you are NOT sure if only to give suggestions on the fix.

Again: Brake parts at the wheels are NOT involved when sitting still so that's something else on top to find,

The vehicle does not have to be moving to hear the noise. The noise is there even when the car is fully stopped and the steering is in a rotated position. Pro mechanics are not reachable. What is the DIY course of action step by step?

If your power steering pump is growling and you are sure it is full of fluid, then you are likely looking at a new pump and flushing the system at that time.

Look at the fluid when the noise is present and see if the fluid is aerated.

Thanks for your responses.I am not a mechanic, how can I tell if the fluid is aerated?
Is there an easy way to flush the transmission fluid through a drain plug? How about sucking out fluid with a plastic pipe?I did some testing and found the following:
The noise only happens when the car is in gear, moving slowly or fully stopped with steering rotated and held in rotated position.
No noise when rotating the steering and the engine is off.
No noise when rotating the steering and the engine is on but the transmission is in parked position.

What does the transmission fluid have to do with the steering?

Now you're changing the symptoms. If it is making a noise because you have it turned all the way against the stops and you are still holding pressure on it STOP DOING THAT.

It doesn't sound like you have much of a problem at all.

I am not rotating the steering all the way and not hitting the stops. Slight steering wheel rotation while the transmission is in drive cause the noise. When transmission is in park, no noise when rotating steering.

Have you checked anything suggested yet? Probably not. Why ask then? Find a shop and have a live professional tech check this out like most people would do,

Belt OK, Fluid level OK and color acceptable. Tried siphoning out PS fluid. Only got 1 ounce out.

Re: grinding noise when the steering wheel is rotated in very slow speed Sign In

? Belt from top post made noise till just recently now this? Sport - some belts totally stink new still should cause a PS failure or noise and I question the observations taken posted just now. Sure depending on how to tried to get fluid out you wont get much "siphoning" wouldn't be my choice rather assertive suck it out if you had to disconnect a return hose depends on each set up.
Color is a clue and or with any debris found if you checked. Perhaps it's just time to have a real tech check this out I know that was in hand of a tech from the first post perhaps not that one next time. This is taking too long to solve WHY it does this risking something is going to be a lot worse for waiting?
