heater noise Sign In

I have a 2006 Scion. When my heater is on sometimes it makes a rubbing squeaking/noise. It sounds like a belt. The second I turn my heat off it stops. Most the time if I turn it right back on it doesnt come back for a while. It never does it when my air is on only the heat. It is starting to happen more often. What is wrong with it?

Does the noise sound like it is coming from the vents or under the dash? Can you hear it outside the vehicle?

as crazy as this sounds it sounds like coming from under hood. Never noticed it coming from vents. Yes when I roll windows down I can hear it. However, if I flip heat off for a sec and then back on it normally stops.

So, if you are standing outside the car with the windows up you can hear it coming from under the hood?

When you have the heater on, do you have the vents selected for defrost?

Re: heater noise Sign In

I know its bad but I notice it when Im driving it and the second I hear it I flip it back off and on so it will stop. I know Im not answering your questions the best. I am pretty sure though that someone else could hear it standing outside the car. The noise comes when the car is on regular heat not defrost. Im not sure if it comes on defrost too because I dont use defrost much this time of year.

Re: heater noise Sign In

There is a TSB (EG031-07) on the engine drive belt squealing. It's caused from the belt not being tensioned enough. With the compressor running or alternator under load, that could cause a loose belt to squeal.

Belt deflection should be 10.5 to 11 mm.

If the belt is frayed or glazed, it should be replaced. If the belt is replaced the deflection should be checked after the engine has been running for 20 mins or so because the new belt will stretch some.
