I just bought a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette with the L48 350. The motor was completely rebuilt in 2006. The owner parked it in his garage for 9 years after with only 1100 miles on the build. I didn't think about the oil before I drove it over 100 miles to get it to its new home. Coming home my oil pressure stayed around 20-25 psi. The next morning I changed the oil and it was very thin. About the consistency of milk I would say. After the oil change I can now hear a knocking noise coming from the bottom of the engine when I excellerate. Now at an idle I have 5-10 psi and driving it only reaches 20psi. Did I hurt this new motor by driving it with that old of an oil in it? I was thinking of just doing the main and rod bearings by dropping the oil pan but wasn't sure if that would fix my problem or make matters worse.

9 years since it was ran? Might have more problems than rod and main bearings, but when you drop the pan you'll be able to tell what is going on. Don't forget about the other components such as cam bearings, cam lobes, and lifters.

9 years without running? IDK - if not even turned for that long it's probably real trouble as DS said more than just main and rod bearings.

Do you know exactly what was done for the rebuild and how extensive or just think that makes it new again? It's not new again ever that's just once on a lower end. It may not be fit to re-work this engine again,

Re: knocking in engine Sign In

Parked 9 years? Had the knock when parked. So were you hosed or got it at fair price to replace the rod bearings, maybe mains too? 25 pounds oil pressure, at what r.p.m.? What was it with engine at normal operating temp., at idle? Should be 20-25 at idle warmed up, 40-60 @ 2 grand. What are the compression readings (check compression with throttle propped open) on each cylinder (write them down, clearer to remember later 1=, 2=, 3 etc.)?
You did not mention when or if it smoked.
My Smokey and the Bandit 6.6 TA TransAm ran 80 pounds @ the "m" on M.P.H., close to the zero, @ 4 grand on the tach. Not all out, just as out as I was willing to go Wink.
