I have a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE with 145,000 miles on it. Recently, it sounds like a diesal engine truck while running., or more specifically like there is something wrong with the muffler(which there isn't) It also seems to be idling faster than usual. It may not be related to the noise but there has been a large amount of carbon around my gas cap. The mechanic looked at it and couldn't find the source and my car recently passed MARTA. Recent repairs include: new water pump, new radiator, spark plugs, gasket cover, brake pads. Any suggestions on why it is so loud ? It isn't overheating, and the transmission seems fine. thanks

What kind of noise is it? Rattle knocking loud exhaust leak growling squeeling ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Can you hear the noise with the engine idling? Is the noise coming from the engine compartment? Using a piece of hose like a stethescope, with one end at your ear, you should be able to pin-point where the noise is coming from. It's possible that you have an exhaust manifold leak that could be hidden with a heat-shield? Loren SW Washington
