Re: noise Sign In

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

As far as your noise, it's pretty tough to diagnose a noise online without hearing anything.

Re: noise Sign In

As HT said noises are difficult for us without hearing it.
That being said and with your discretion; I'm thinking possibly a wheel bearing?
Does this noise change if you were to change lanes to the left or right? If so that would be another indicator that a wheel bearing is failing.

Re: noise Sign In

I'm assuming so, have you properly shimmed the rear differential so that the angles are correct. This totally sounds like you are having differential side carrier bearing issues.

Jessica, the day they put a rear differential into this front-wheel drive car then maybe you would be onto something. But they didn't so please only offer advise on subjects and vehicles that you are very well versed in and know how to properly diagnose and repair. Things like that just send people hunting in circles and delay repairing of the actual problem.

Please also bear in mind that shimming a rear to adjust pinion angle only serves to reduce u-joint wear and vibration. It has no effect on carrier bearings.
