2005 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8 V6 144,000 miles

I have a 2005 pontiac grand prix with 144,000 miles on it. After the first freeze this year, it started making a loud tapping/ticking/slapping noise from the bottom of the engine compartment just like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfw08eFUWZk

The video is of someone else's 2006 Grand Prix but it is the exact same noise and situation. It only happens when the vehicle is cold and the sound gradually fades as the vehicle warms up until it is completely gone.

The is no check engine light on or pending codes. The vehicle drives fine.

I got the oil changed shortly after the noise started but no change. I had the transmission rebuilt/replaced 3 months ago.

Does the noise increase with frequency if you rev the engine? Have you been able to pinpoint the location of the noise? Is the compressor clutch engaged?

The noise does not increase if I rev the engine if anything it seems to decrease. The warmer the engine gets the weaker the sound gets until its gone. It sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine possibly. I don't know what the compressor clutch is, sorry

If the frequency of the noise doesn't increase with the RPM of the engine, then it might not be a mechanical problem with the engine itself or accessory driven components.

You will probably have to get the vehicle in the air to see if you can locate the origin of the noise.

The air conditioning compressor has a clutch on the front. The belt drives the hub. When the clutch plate on the front engages, when you turn the ac or defrosters on, it mechanically connects the compressor drive shaft to the hub.
