tapping on inside of valve cover Sign In

Hi everyone. I recently bought a 1999 3.5L V6 Mitsubishi Magna with 300,000 K's. The cars got a few things wrong with it but the engine wasn't making any unusual noises. The mitsubishi garage changed the oil and filter when I put it in for a service and there been a tapping noise almost constantly since.
I wasnt sure what the cause was initially but after removing the rear valve cover, I think Ive found the problem:
Theres a small mark where the rocker(?) has been knocking against the valve cover, and corresponding bright patch on the rocker(?). Can anyone advise on possible causes and remedies. Would it be an easy fix?

300K IMO is an AYOR car. Barely matters now as you've messed with it but what did you ask the Mitsubishi Dealer to do? Just an oil change or what? If a problem instantly thing to do is go right back right away. By touching it you own it now and an oil change alone unlikely to cause it maybe changed out some strange additive that covered it up to sell it?
So you've found a rocker that can travel out of its range and make noise maybe not even operate that valve? Could you see what allowed that, the rocker itself, the way it's mounted or other something strange vs the other ones. It has to have something different about it and that would be the fix as you see the problem - I can't.

What are you willing or able to do about it? Up to a fix for that head if need be or more could be quite costly.

Maybe this would be better: Take it in now for a total engine diagnosis as to it's real condition so you can decide from there your next move,
