I have a 03 Taurus that starting idling funny at red lights nearly stalling. got it home was pretty sure it was a headgasket because the coolant was black so I did a compression test but now I am unsure. the readings were
1 135 psi
2 125 psi
3 140 psi
4 130 psi
5 118 psi
6 135 psi
everything seems fine? plugs looks good too...car does not overheat although I only drove it for 40 minutes after this happened the next day.

I don't know what would lead you to a head gasket so quickly, especially since you mentioned nothing about overheating. Somebody ma have mixed some green coolant with red. That tends to look black. I would just flush that out and install new coolant.

For the idle issues............

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Which engine? DOHC or OHV? Check engine light on? If so, what trouble code number(s) are stored?

Don't care to much for the difference between the highest and lowest numbers you got on your test, but that doesn't necessarily indicate a head gasket issue. If you add a little oil to #5 cylinder, what is the reading you get?

got to the car this morning cleaned the iac tested that cylinder again dry 90...second time dry 80 third time with little oil 118( in the first post before I got 118 I had 90 on my first dry test). drained the coolant it looked orange/brown. however the car is still not overheating and no codes have come up because my battery is dead.

I think you should connect a leak down tester on it. To find out exactly where your losing compression.

Fill the radiator to over flowing the radiator neck, or fill port. Leave the cap off. Start the engine, watch the radiator opening, as air works out of the system, you may be required to add water to keep the level at over flowing. After the system is full, water, swelling from heat may over flow, not a problem. If bubbles never stop coming out of the radiator fill spout, that tends to lean toward a head gasket. If bubbles stop, this is not a head gasket problem.

You can't do that. the coolant is going to boil without being under pressure.

This thread is 3 months old anyway.
