1990's Gm am/fm cd player Sign In

Hello,
Purchased this radio/cd player a couple of years ago on ebay and everything works great until cold weather seems to appear. The display goes out and the volume isn't controllable. The radio or cd continues to play but you can't switch stations or control the volume or see the display when this happens.

In the summer or warmer weather everything seems o.k. Is this worth fixing? Any ideas what may be the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks

There is a temperature sensor in the inner workings of 90% of head units. When the unit gets hot, the sensor turns the fan on to cool it and exhaust hear from the top and back. When cold the sensor intakes heat by reversing the fan to make sure all is well. NOW, this is not the case with all stereos, BUT it sounds like your temp sensor or fan may be faulty. The sensor might be recognising that the system is cold and then trys to bring in heat, but the fan may be cooling instead making the unit "non-responsive" as the circuits are freezing and not working properly.

Best bet, Replace. It's too hard to determine the problem without pulling it apart and giving it to an electronics expert. But that's my guess.

Hi,

I could be wrong but your reply seems to be referring to a household stereo. This is a car stereo. I don't think any fan is in the radio?
Let me know?

No mate, talking bout car stereos, next time your see a dud stereo unit, pull it apart and have a look at the inner workings. You're right though, Not all units have a small fan.
