1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Speakers go in and out

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 L with the factory stereo/cd/cassette. The cd player nor the cassette work. I don't care about the cd or cassette. The radio's displays work, you can change the station and turn it off and on. The problem is that the speakers cut in and out just whenever. There is no particular time or point when it happens. When it does kick back on it pops and is really load. Also when the speakers go out, the built in equilizer lights go out.

Sounds like a loose power or ground. More than likely, ground, if the display continues to work. Doesn't take much of a ground for the display and could even be on a different circuit than the speakers/equalizer. Could very easily be internal in the radio itself.

I pulled the radio out yesterday and didn't see any loose connections. Also come to think of it, Up here in MI it warmed up about 2 weeks ago and it actually worked for the 3 days it was in the 40's and 50's.

Based on all the different issues, sounds like a cracked power supply regulator circuit board. These combos are built by Mitsubishi and are very high quality. They have very little trouble with the cd and cassette players, and the only display trouble is from the UPS basketball team dropping the radio which often cracks the regulator board or the faceplate circuit board behind the volume knob.
If all the speakers quit at the same time, suspect a radio issue or a problem with an intermittent loss of the 12 volt memory circuit. Loss of that circuit usually also affects the circuit it is tied into; something that is always hot such as the horn, interior lights, or cigarette lighter circuits. On a few models, loss of this circuit will cause loss of display too.
Remove one speaker from a door and look at the connector. If it has four wires in the truck's wiring harness, the speakers have built-in amplifiers. These give a lot of trouble but I can repair them. If they all quit at once, there could be a problem with the relay that turns on the power to them, or more commonly, a bad connection inside the radio that turns on that relay.
If only one speaker quits, switch it with the same one from the other side of the truck. If the same speaker quits, it's a problem with the speaker. If the speaker in the same corner of the truck quits, suspect cracked and frayed wires between the door hinges or a problem in the radio.
All of the yellow leds in the tone controls will quit working together. Slide the controls up and down a bunch of times. If they start working intermittently, the best thing to do is run them up and down a bunch of times to clean the electrical contacts. There are chemicals you can spray in to clean the slides, but they will make the controls stick and not slide smoothly.
