2002 SDI Golf Stereo Problems

Hi, I recently bought a new SDI Golf. The car is great but the car stereo doesn't maintain memory once the ignition is switched off. I have tried switching the red and yellow wires but then get no sound at all. When I first removed the unit, both the red and yellow wires from the stereo were hooked up to the yellow wire coming from the car and the red wire coming from the car was left unattached. This is the only combination that gets the radio to work at all. I have tried other combinations but none of them work. I tried connecting the red & yellow from the stereo to the red from the car, but that seems to have blown a fuse or something. I have no sound at all now... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I am guessing this is an aftermarket stereo. What you need to do is establish which wire coming from the stereo is the memory wire. The memory wire reqires constant power, whereas the power supply for the unit needs only to be accessorised.
EG - Your brake lights have constant power, so does your interior light. See it you cant splice your power wire to one of these.
Your cigarette lighter is a great source for accessorised power.
Red wire is usually power to unit
Black / green is earth
Yellow / blue is Memory 90% of the time
grey / pink / any other colour is speakers.
The fuse you have blown is probably at the back of the unit, just change it out.
