2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid audio not working Sign In

Hello,

One day sound from the car stereo just disappeared in my wife's car. It is a 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid, with JBL speakers, and a radio with navigation.

If I set volume to max I can barely hear music. But sometimes suddenly it kicks in and starts to work normally in the middle of a ride, but then stops working spontaneously again sometimes in a few minutes and sometimes longer.

I've tried to move connectors on the back of the radio and on the amplifier in the trunk, to check for a loose connection. Also swapped the amp with an identical one but it didn't help. Can't figure it out.

Could you help me with troubleshooting?

Thanks

That radio has an external amplifier in the back of the vehicle that may be failing but you would need a technician to do some testing for that.

I swapped the amp in the trunk with an identical one, but it didn't help. Today tried to swap the radio unit but it didn't help either.

I can test voltages at the amplifier connectors, but I don't know what to look for.
Any suggestions?

Re: 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid audio not working Sign In

Thank you for the wiring diagram.

I've measured different voltages at pins 1 and 2 of the s22 connector of the amplifier in the trunk:

1 Pink (AMP ON): 13.4 V
2 Green (ACC): 14.5 V
Also, the mute pin has a non-zero voltage
12 Brown (MUTE): 4.7 V
Pins 4 and 11 are ~0 V
Pins 5,6,13 and 14 seem to yield small AC voltage, may need to check with headphones for the sound signal

For connector s23:
7 red yellow (+B): 14.4 V
12 white black (PWR GND) 0 V
All other pins have non-zero potential relative to the body (all the voltages above are also measured relative to the body) of about 7 V. But zero voltage between any pair. The resistance of the speakers measured at the connector is 4 ohms.

Could you tell me if any of these readings are out of the expected range?

Upd: fixed by removing MUTE pin from the connector. These 4.7 volts on the pin basically switched of the amp output.

There is no mute button for the radio, so I suspect it is implemented somewhere in navigation module to enhance voice prompts.

The only problem with the solution is that now I get loud bum when I turn on the radio.

Please let me know if you know a better solution.

You're probably going to need that mute feature for both navigation and bluetooth phone if you have it.
