Any possibility of repairing a stereo that broke from a bad ground? Sign In

Hello everyone,
Recently the aftermarket pioneer head unit in my toyota yaris died because of a bad ground. long story short my wife ran the car out of fuel and that clogged fuel filter that is built into the fuel pump assembly. Well somewhere in the course of disassembling everything several times because the auto parts store made no mention of there being an in tank filter. One of the body grounds came loose and on my first test drive of the car the radio started a few times and then died.

i fixed the ground and then checked all fuses. But the radio will not come on. I already spent quite a bit of money replacing the fuel pump and injector and several other things due to this. So I'm just curious if there is any way to repair a head unit from that kind of damage.

I personally don't see how a poor ground is going to destroy an electrical component such as a radio. Have you made any electrical checks at the radio's connector using a volt meter?

I agree, I think you are barking up the wrong tree there blaming the ground.

I tested the stereo wiring harness, connected it directly to the battery and then benched tested it. I couldn't tell you why this would happen but this is not the first time I have seen it happen either. Not sure if the culprit is the bad ground or rapid fluctuation in power. This isn't my forte.

This however is, so are we going to argue that in tank strainers make running a car dry harmless or that taking a used lifetime fuel filter and then exposing it and all the trapped crud to air isn't bad?

No, we're telling you that your fuel tank problems have nothing to do with your radio. I seriously doubt the fuel filter was the other issue either. Running out of fuel doesn't do that.

Which year Yaris? Where was the ground located that you had to repair? When you bench tested your radio, did it work?

Are both the yellow and red wires getting power? If so, try bench testing the radio again and if you have a multimeter see if there is a short between the ground wire and the chassis. If not you may have a blown ground trace inside of the radio.
