hey guys so i have a 1998 BMW 316i coupe. I bought an aftermarket (JVC) stereo for it. i couldn't locate the color codes for the wires so i had to shoot them and locate the power and ignition...so i have the constant 12 and ignition and ground hooked up, the head unit itself turned on. Now i'm moving to the speakers. i hooked up a pair of speaker wires to my head unit, but nothing comes out... it appears to have 8 pair of speaker wires, but also leaving 7 odd ones out... i dont know if theres a factory amp that i'm suppose to hook up too?? never worked on a BMW before... so i'm a little confused. with my other cars, i just simply had to wire up power and hook up speakers and i was good to go pretty much.... please help

with my other cars, i just simply had to wire up power and hook up speakers and i was good to go pretty much.. You can pretty much forget that. Things are much different now. That radio has speed input, data lines, cell phone hook up, tachometer input, etc, etc They make adapter harnesses that will keep you out of trouble. You have no idea how much damage you can do poking around in there. By the way....... you drive a 318i, not a 316. They don't make a 316 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Chopping wires up? PLEASE don't be Sam. Do it the right way with the adapter that you can get anywhere that sells stereos. They may have to order yours in since its a BMW but you are way better off doing that. Go back and solder the wires you cut back into the factory plug. Make sure you cover them with heat shrink tubing and never do that again to any car you own or risk the most evil electrical gremlins you can imagine.

The 316ti has a 1.9 liter, 85 kW/116 bhp four-cylinder engine. The more powerful 325ti features BMW's 2.5 liter straight six-cylinder engine.

316 isn't sold here in the states. You really need a wiring diagram to be sure your connecting to the correct wiring. I agree with the others about using the stereo adapter though. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
