BMW Radio - Use in a Boat Sign In

I have a used Ke-81 BMW Radio that I would like to use in a boat. Does the radio require it to be hooked up to a BMW? Do you have to know the original VIN to get the unlock code?

Re: BMW Radio - Use in a Boat Sign In

Hi... I know with my bmw radio I had to call a service center with the code from the back of the radio, then they would give you a code... I'm note sure if they will do this without the vin.

But it may be worth tring it out.

If this doesn't work out for you, you may be able to pick up a radio for under $20 on ebay or yahoo auctios.

Re: BMW Radio - Use in a Boat Sign In

I appreciate the comments. I'm new, forgive me if I post messages in the wrong places.

Anyway, I have a couple of old radios lying around and I want to use one with my great marine speakers without buying a radio, if I can help it. The antenna and speakers will give me the sound. I want to use the radio just during shrimping season while I am slowly moving along dragging for shrimp. If it rots, I don't care, the radio will be removed like all my other electronics, while the boat is not in use.

The BMW looks like the easiest to hook up, if I can get pass the anti theft feature. I just don't what to bother with it if the radio won't work unless it is actually wired to a car. The other radios will require more time to solder the connections. Can you buy connections that fit into the back of radios in order to wire it to a battery?

Thanks, Mary

Mary you may want to take the radio to a radio shack, they can be very helpful when it comes to doing stuff like this.

Re: BMW Radio - Use in a Boat Sign In

I'm right with you. I was on my way to Radio Shack after work today to have them show me the right way to connect the speakers. (They have done this before). We have a good store here that has helped me many times. I got the security code from the local BMW dealer, but, the guy, I talked too, kind of doubted that the radio would work unless it was in the car. That is my question. I don't want to go to the trouble with this radio if the only place you can use it is in a BMW car. I read somewhere that some of these anti theft radio's have built in logic to check the VIN programmed in the radio with the one that is associated with the car it's in. Beats me how this is done. Anyway, I will run my test on it this weekend and either chuck the radio or, I'll be listening to Jazz this Sunday while trolling for shrimp.

Thanks for you help! I will post a followup message if I get this thing working so anybody else that wants to try this can have a head start.

Mary
