If it is the original system, it will be externally regulated. The only way your going to know for sure it to look at it. Why does your installer believe it is a charging system problem?

What? Stereo installer thinks it's a regulator - not. Problem with stereo is a problem with the stereo and how installed for that not the regulator alone and might need help with that.

Externally regulated if OE in a box usually on firewall. You can take those apart to clean and adjust those for exact operating voltage range if not already correct which you can check with about any voltmeter.

This could already have been changed out for a sealed external regulator. Plug end and spades of the regular would be a routine spot to lube or corroded long ago maybe more than once already. Check that if voltage off first then decide what to do.

Hey - if a stereo installer isn't getting proper power with the engine off to test the stereo then you have other issues to tend to like battery on to fuse box inside. If new stereo exceeds what the car can normally handle stereo pro should have known or suggested more than just a regulator to power it and I wouldn't go too nuts personally as any radio that came with this originally used enough power if just a one speaker AM only job. If radio delete (many were) the wires were there anyway just no antennae, no ready spots for speakers in doors or rear package shelf but room to do that,

Re: How to replace voltage requlator Sign In

I would want a confirmed measurement before condemning a charging issue because someone who puts stereos in says so. If he was a tech, that is what he would be doing and making better money than some stereo guy.

The best people at making sub-par work are usually also the best people at making excuses for their bad results.
