Radio Stopped Working on '98 Cherokee Sign In

The radio on my wife's 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee suddenly stopped working about a month ago. The CD player still works... Any help is appreciated!

Does the display light up? If the CD player is integrated into the radio, that probably means you have power and ground to the radio. To verify you would have to remove the radio and check for power and grounds at the connector that plugs into the back of the radio.

If the display lights up and you can change stations, there is possibility that you could have a short in a speaker circuit. You would have to use an ohm meter to inspect those circuit for shorts. If you find your wiring and speakers to be good, the amplifier circuits in the radio itself may be the culprit.

If you can play music with the CD player, that would probably mean the amplifier circuits, wiring and speakers are good and you have some sort of tuner problem. Sometimes if the antenna circuit is open or not plugged in, the radio won't play station music.

If you do determine the radio has an internal problem, there are companies that do radio repairs that you would have to send your radio out to. You can also install aftermarket units if you find it more cost effective. Most aftermarket units require you to buy an installation kit and some type of conversion harness.

Thanks for the quick reply, Discretesignals! The display lights up and the CD player is integrated. The CD player still plays CD's so I can't see it being a speaker issue. I'm leaning more toward the antenna...?? I guess I'm just not too sure on how to get to it...?

To test the antenna and cable, you would have to remove the radio to get access to the antenna cable end. You can use an ohm meter to test the antenna.

There are 4 tests.

Test 1: Check for continuity from the mast to the antenna base. You shouldn't have any continuity.

Test 2 : Check the antenna for an open circuit. Connect one end of the ohm meter to the center pin on the antenna cable at the radio and the other end of the ohm meter to the antenna mast. You should have continuity.

Test 3: Check body ground. Disconnect both battery terminals and then reconnect the negative terminal. Connect an ohm meter to the fender and to the negative terminal on the battery. You should have less than an one ohm.

Test 4: Check ground from fender to outer crimp on the end of the antenna cable at the radio. You should have less than one ohm.

Note: Make sure your meter lead contact point at the fender is bare metal.
