cassette tape won't eject from older AC-Delco deck Sign In

I have a 1989 Olds '88' with the factory AC-Delco AM-FM cassette tape stereo with an integrated equalizer. There is a tape in the player that will not eject. The problem this causes is the radio doesn't play unless the tape ejects and I only listen to the radio.

I took the deck out and dis-assembled it. It was the first player of this type I've had apart. I was surprised how modular it is. It reminded me of the stereo I have in my shop, which I have taken apart numerous times to keep it alive.

I spent two hours trying to release the tape. The problem I'm having is I can't remember if the tape loads into the deck by a motor and gear drive, or if it mechanically loads into the deck by manual force, and is held in place by a spring-loaded catch, (the Olds was parked for almost 9 years due to a mechanical problem, so it's been a long time since I used the radio).

If anyone can help me get that damn tape out, I'd greatly appreciate the sharing of your knowledge. I can post as many pics as it would take, to help, (from any angle or distance you request).

I'm disabled and live on SS Disability, so taking it to a shop for repair, or replacing it is something I'd rather not do - besides, the rest of the deck works great, it has some good features, and I primarily listen to talk radio while in the car.

Thanks in advance,

GeoD

I think that radio was fairly universal for OE GM use in the vintage. You may lose that tape or destroy unit to get it out.

Have you checked out a pull you own salvage yard? You could test one - perhaps w/o tape player that's just fine and plugs right in. I still like tapes but the rubber belt driven ones don't like getting old like a lot of usMad

it's a good possibility it may have a bad belt(s) without knowing if it is manual or electronic eject it is hard to figure out what you need to do to eject the tape.

Re: cassette tape won't eject from older AC-Delco deck Sign In

I plead IDK way too much about the inner workings. Bet is it's gear not belt and the ones I've owned or used from 80s thru 90s power took tape out of your hand when inserted far enough and powered it back out via some little motor upon request.

I really like these radios! Own two right now in an 88 Celebrity w no tape and 97 P/U with tape which are much the same for controls and probably (both work fine so haven't touched them) share the same basic plug but can't verify that.

If you have digital controls there may be total differences. Again - love this radio set up better than most as you don't need to pull over and read a manual to use them - I hate that! Have had to change out two on 80s (happen to be Ford products) and the aftermarket ones are not expensive for basic stuff and can get a plug so you don't need cut up wiring but controls are so small and all flush that it's worse than text messaging the Library of Congress to change anything vs OE seems to always think about basic straight forward controls.

Hey for folks who want wild systems go for it but you can have that. I just know you could swap out the whole thing for used w tape or not. I don't put much faith in tape or CD lasting decades but the radio can. Old Phart here and have had a ton of cars over 20 years old. Wasn't that long ago just got rid of one with a factory 8 track! Tape quit on that early - radio kept on forever.

Good news is you can get either (I think still) tape or CD to play thru antennae and just set radio to a dead known # and have had those that worked fine.

Do you have a good salvage yard that's resonable for stuff like that? I do and would test stuf out right there before buying it for probably $25 bucks so hardly worth too much fussing,

in some of the delco tape decks, if the belt went bad it would leave the mech in such a position where you couldn't eject the tape unless you took the tape mech apart and moved the gears to the proper position.

I'll take a look at it tonight and see if I can find a belt or remnants of a belt. If I can, I'll try to manually move the gears. So far, I've only been able to move the plunger of a solenoid, and a mechanism that moves the heads into the 'Play' position. It's like the tape is stuck part way 'In' or part way 'Out' - (does that make sense?) When you press the eject button, you hear a distinct clunk like a solenoid is being actuated.

Thanks for the help.

Later,

GeoD
