I have a 2000 chevy s-10 and the air bag light came on a couple of months ago and hasn't shut off since. I've been told that it can't be checked with a regular hand held computer under the dash. I even heard that it could be a dead back-up battery in the air bad system its self, but i get the dreaded puppy dog look from the guy behind the parts counter so i'm stumpped. Trucks' never been wrecked very well maintained and i'm the original owner. Thanks for the help!

To even begin this repair you’ll need to have the BCM (body control module) scanned to retrieve codes and yes most of the cheap code readers will only read PCM (power-train control module) codes. A couple of common issues I’ve had with air bags are the clock springs in the steering column the other being the seat belt pretensioner connections under the seats. The only warning I’ll give you is; if you are going to try and repair this yourself? Get a proper service manual for this vehicle and the air bag system; read it and understand it before you go poking around the system connectors. Jumper or touch the wrong thing and it’ll be all over before you even know what has happened or hit you. Dan. Canadian "EH"
