Ok. So my wife's 06 PT Cruiser broke a timing belt a few months ago. We were incredibly lucky and ONLY broke the timing belt. However, apparently there was some sort of electrical problem as well because the air bag module is not shot (air bag light is on constantly). No worries there...a few weeks after repairs the brake light (indicator on the dash for the hand brake) came on. I double checked the brake to ensure it was down and let it go. The light stays on, along with the air bag light. Still, no worries. A few weeks after that, the battery light came on. It is intermittent at best whether or not it is on. I checked the battery and it was good, I checked the alternator (put a meter on the battery and turned on the AC and verified charging voltage) and all appears good there. This morning (about a month after the battery light came on the first time) my wife calls me on her way to work to tell me that the radio shut off on its own. While we were talking, the engine shut off. When I got to the car about 3 hours later, I looked it over, started it up and took it for a drive. About 20 minutes later, as I was about to pull back into our subdivision the engine died. Along with 100% of the electrical. No dash lights, no hazard lights, no turn signals...nothing. I pulled the car over to the side of the road and put it in park and tried again with no results. I left the hazard lights on (still not working), popped the hood and took a look at the battery cables again. They look great! However, when I wriggled the pos. cable I noticed the hazard lights were working again. I don't see any signs of corrosion around the cables or on the battery posts. The battery is good. There is a smaller cable coming off of the pos. cable that goes down underneath the battery that has been butt spliced but it looks good too. Even if that were the case, would it cause a total shutdown of electronics in the car? Has anyone seen this or anything like it before? I'm stumped...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your probably going to have to take it to a shop that has an enhanced scan tool that can access most of the computer modules in that vehicle. There is one module called an integrated power module (IPM) that controls power to just about everything in the vehicle. The IPM along with the other modules in the vehicle have the capability of diagnosing faults and storing codes. You won't get those codes with a generic OBD code reader. Getting any stored codes is just the beginning. The information has to be interpreted and then a diagnostic strategy developed to even begin were to look. Without any diagnostic data or test results, it is almost impossible to tell you what could be wrong. The only thing that you can do, which you probably have already done, is check your battery cables to see if there is an excessive amount of resistance in them by doing voltage drop testing. Also inspect the wiring and connectors around the engine bay to be sure they are clean and tight. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

From what I am gathering, I have a problem with the TIPM. Looking thru all of the replacement parts stores, this is not an item I can purchase. The module itself looks easy enough to pull out and replace. Have you ever heard of getting one from a junkyard and DIY? Looking at the bottom, there are 3 big cable clusters and 5 smaller cable connections. I would love to save myself $1000.00 and do it myself, but I am a minor shade tree mechanic at best, and not great at tracing down the more complex electrical problems. But I can R&R like nobody's business. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not telling you that it is the IPM that is causing your issue. You need to have it diagnosed to find out where the problem is and that the start of diagnosing is pulling codes that may be stored in the IPM or other modules in the vehicle. The IPM may not even be the culprit here. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
