1971 Dart electrical mess Sign In

Say, Is there anyone out there that could help me, I have a 71 Dart swinger I purchased off e-bay. There is no directional lights or brake lites. Recently I had the car painted and sat 3 months is a school class room for a project car . When I got it home it does'nt want to start. It's getting gas but no spark. Should I bite the bullet and buy a Painless wire kit and start over? The previous owner did not take care if the car and whatever he touched He messed up. your guidance would be helpful.

Is the old wiring harness hacked up or anything?
Is there damage under the dash or in in the steering column?

Yes the wiring is hacked up he reached underneath the dash and pulled wires down, took a hammer and beat the shifter off the column and put a b&m shifter on the floor.Took the starter switch and made it a push button start. Other than that she's in great shape

You could have some serious issues then. You may end up having to remove the dash and replace the whole harness with a used one depending on how much damage there is. It's going to be hard to find any wiring diagrams for anything that old.

i've found a wiring diagram on the internet through mopar muscle ,problely strart with that. I've talked to some people on the painless wire kits and they say it's the way to go , All diagrams should come with the kit (I hope). Gotta keep on the possitive side.

You'll have a nice car when your done. I used to have a 69 340 Swinger that was pretty quick back in the day.

I learned a lot about how to make a 340 kick ass. My car shocked a lot of people. I tried a lot of different mods until I found the fastest combo.

340's are awesome but hard to find , Tell me what you know about stuffing a 400 or a 440 in one of these. it had a 225 6 cyl orignially has a 318 now with Schumacher mounts but I think the front end wouldn't support it. Correct?

Don't even think about trying that. That frame can't handle anything but a small block. The torsion bars aren't heavy enough, the wheels only have a 4 inch bolt circle and the unibody just can't handle the weight, especially if it originally had a 6 cylinder. Just find a 340. They will smoke most of the big blocks from that era anyway.

You'll get a whole lot more out of a 340. The 360 never did much.
