1971 jeep cj5 intermittent starting problem

1971 jeep cj5 intermittent starting problem Sign In

I have replaced the battery, starter, ignition switch, wires from the switch the the starter, and from the coil to the starter. Sometimes it starts right up, sometimes it takes a couple of tries then it turns over, sometimes it does nothing, no clicks or sounds at all. This was happening before I replaced everything.
The volt meter will also drop to 0. But it also drop for a moment when it turns over. All other electric components work all the time.

The answer no doubt it you lack a ground someplace.
Now a bunch of questions doesn't matter just curious. 1971? No "V" engines offered in any "CJs" had been still a wild mix but mostly used International Harvester engines! Yup, there was a suicide V8 possible new it was yellow I knew the thing!
What do you have here now? 1971 you could get this with all metal and just a driver's seat, no top at all and order on up and or when totally rusted out put a pre-made fiberglass body on the frame and yes could fit assorted engines.
Almost nothing really matters now the problem is it just doesn't complete a power loop up to apparently nothing with key request. This is as low tech as a garden tractor/lawn mower for ignition or close. Follow that it triggers solenoid all the way back to ignition always has power ready or should.
Have to ask they didn't make this engine so what type of starter is it? Solenoid on top of it or one on a fender well or what? Either makes the final high power of amps to starter also must have connections of higher gauge wire battery on thru solenoid is the real switch you just trigger it. Any one of those connections if lousy up to assorted grounding of battery negative to engine block first and on to metal body parts, dash and frame on this thing too.
Just last for now and way too common: People just toss everything they can think of and don't find the reason first! Sorry - have a problem with that the stuff you tossed really could have been better than what you put on new now all the new stuff is suspect really complicates things. One highly suspect thing at a time if reduced to guessing you should have narrowed it down and seem to now AFTER all that.


Problem now could be a failed new part is my point not the problem you were fixing,
