1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 2.5 L4 68,000 miles (yes, only 68,000) Here's my current problem: The "CHARGE" light on the dashboard is lit up and the battery voltage reads lower than it should (it's down in the yellow when it should be in the white). Running the engine won't charge the battery. The headlights are dim and the turn signals and emergency flashers all flash much slower than normal. Here's what happened: The "CHARGE" light came on when I started the car a few days ago and I noticed that the battery was losing charge. Here's what I've tried: I'm using a NEW battery, having recently gotten rid of the old one which was not charging and which according to the guy who tested it at Pep Boys had dead cells. I really appreciate any suggestions anyone might have! Brad

Sounds like the alternator failed. Alternator keeps the battery charged. Stop at Autozone or a parts chain and they will check the charging system (alternator) for free. Keep in mind, driving the vehicle when its not charging will result in the vehicle breaking down . Once the charge in the battery depletes, the vehicle will stall out.

Thanks, Jim. I'll have it checked out. However, I replaced the alternator only about a year ago. If it's not the alternator, are there other possibilities?

these alternators tend to fail regularly make sure you dont over tighten the belt, if it has a spring loaded tensioner, be sure the alignment is good and it moves freely I believe napa has a 5 year guarantee on theirs with road side assistance , good luck Todd
