Hello: I have a 1991 Mits Montero 5speed 4x4. The brakes lights stay illuminated all the time even when the keys are out. I removed the 15amp blade fuse for this and the lights go out but I still have a severe electrical draw and my battery dies in 6hours. Mits starts back up fine after a jump and runs great. What do I check or replace to fix this electrical draw? Thanks.

There is a switch down by the brk pedal. When the pedal is pushed the switch opens up (actually closes) and the lights come on. When the pedal is released, it comes back up, pushes on the switch and turns the lights off. Sometimes the switch will get loose & slide back in it's holder, this causes the switch to open up when the pedal is all the way up and the lights will stay on, even when the pedal isn't being pushed... Sometimes you can simply push the switch back into place. Other times the clip that holds the switch is so worn it needs to be replaced.

Thanks Sidom. You nailed it. The brake pedal switch is in working order but the nylon bushing grommet thing that is attached to the brake pedal is deteriorated and it doesn't make contact with the pedal switch. So now I have to bring this little eraser size nylon bushing piece to the dealership and see if they can get one for me.

Glad you found the problem..... I had forgot about the tabs on the pedal and falling off..... Yes, that's a problem too..... Hopefully the dealer can help you out, sometimes trying to find just the tab for the brk pedal is harder than searching for the Holy Grail.... In the past I have zip tied pieces of plastic or got universal tab kits out of a "help" section and found something that worked to replace the factory one ....

FYI. The Mits dealership was able to order the plastic tabs for me. I had him order 2, for a whopping $6, because I noticed, when I was down under the dash, that the clutch pedal has the same plastic tab on it like the brake pedal. This tab was also deteriorated, so fortunately I avoided a $80 electrical diagnosis charge from my local Pep Boys to fix my brake light problem. I found out that my clutch pedal has this tab on it because I have cruise control on my Mits and the switch on the clutch pedal is needed to shut of cruise control when the clutch pedal is pressed on to avoid the cruise control of over revving the engine.

That's great you were able to find the pieces with out having to buy the whole car......and save some money in the process..... I'm sure Manny, Moe & Jack are a little p*ssed off at me right now but they'll get over it..........................They always do.....
