1992 Isuzu Trooper sparking. Sign In

I just bought a 1992 Isuzu Trooper. I seems to run strong with a V6 3.2 liter engine, standard tranny, and over 200,000 miles on it. I have noticed that somewhere on the engine I am hearing an intermittent sparking or snapping sound when the engine is running. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this? Also my speedometer intermittently works. Does the 1992 use a sensor or cable for this? Thanks for your help.

Can you narrow this down some as noises are tough enough. Electrical noise or some other "snapping" noise is a pretty wide field.

Speedo cable or not. I'd even have to look to see. Electrical snapping is usually high voltage items like secondarys for spark - plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc.

Cables for speedo failures can "whirr" hmmmm or other but wouldn't call that "snapping" ??

When it is dark outside look around the engine while it is running. You might be able to see spark leakage if that is causing your snapping noise. Usually the snapping noise will happen at the same time you hear the engine miss.

It uses a vehicle speed sensor.

Thanks for the help. I found the spark. It is arcing on the coil pack for the #6 cylinder so I will need to replace the coil. Does anyone know where the speed sensor is located on my vehicle? As my speedometer is working intermittently.
Thanks again.

If you have spark popping out of the coil, you might want to go ahead and check your plugs and replace your plug wires. If the wires or plugs are worn out or if the terminals in the wires are corroded, you'll pop another hole in your new coil.

speed sensor is on the extension housing of the transmission.
