I've had this issue with my engine shutting down while idling, and also the engine sputtering when going on uphill slopes for a sustained period of time. It's been really difficult finding out what the issue is, but the third time I took my car in, the mechanic noticed that the connector between the distributor (which is less than 2 years old) and the wiring harness was cracked. Tightening it didn't seem to work, and they're suggesting that I might have to get the "wiring harness" fixed. This sounds okay, but they're claiming that such a procedure might cost $1500 in a worst case scenario. Could that possibly be correct? What exactly would be so expensive about that? I did a casual Google search for wiring harnesses and there was nothing near that cost. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The replacement of a wiring harnes is one of the worst jobs in the known universe. All those wires you see in it, need to be disconnected and re-connected to the appropriate devices. I think it costs so much due to Labour. I have done 1 wiring harness in my entire career, (through choice) took me about 5 hrs..
