I have a 1996 Ford Aerostar 3.0L and I want to change spark plugs and wires. I have not tried this, before, and I don't want to cause any engine damage by doing it wrong. It has a spark box with 6 nipples. are they laid out the same as the sparkplugs. or is there a firing order I must follow?

Quite simply - do them one at a time!!!! Don't overtighten gasketless plugs. I recall something like 1/16 turn after they bottom out.

Trick - use a piece of rubber hose to start a new plug in till you are sure you are NOT cross threaded, before you put any wrench force on it. Good luck,

Thank you Tom, but, I still want to know if the spark-box nipples are laid out in the same pattern as the engine cylinders, just in case things become confused in that tight space.

I have to plead "I don't know" so mark them using letters - ABCDEF and write down whether you went top to bottom or whatever and which letter goes to which cyl if you are changing wires and get all screwed up it can save hours of guessing. Using letters instead of #s will save further confusion with the real #s. Still best to go one at a time, Good luck,

Re: 1996 Ford Aerostar Sign In

Thanks again Tom. I had to break down and buy a book on the vehicle. At first, it was unclear, because all the 3.0L engines (as mine is marked) use distributors! I had to refer to the 4.0L engine section to find the correct wiring information. It was: Starting from the left side, standing in front of the engine, the cylinders are numbered from front to back 1-2-3. The right side is, from front to back, 4-5-6. The coil pack is almost the same, with the left three from front to back, numbered 1-2-3, but, the right side, from front to back is numbered 5-6-4.
It's a good thing I got the book, because taking out one wire at a time proved almost impossible, due to the factory installed wire holders. I will attach a diagram from the book for some 3.0L and all 4.0L engines, in case anyone else has the same problem.
